I'm about to start basing up my Chaos Space Marine centuries and I was wondering what people do for the (NetEpic) 1000 Sons Automatons? I've tried carving the head off a beaky marine and drilling a hole (for that hollow look) but it's not that convincing. Any ideas?

The armor is supposed to be sealed, so it would look normal.
As far as models, I use mostly standard SM models. I usually have 1 model per stand with a head dress of some kind. For that I've either used the old TSons chaos marines or I cut a small piece of styrene sheet and glue it to the "forehead" of the model. Paint sceme does the rest.
Warmaster Nice has a good example of a Thousand Sons army on his website, Epic Lounge, which is similar to what I did.

Thanks Neal
Here they are:

I think mixing various kind of Marines looks really nice on chaos marine stands. It doesn't matter that much exactly how you model them as long as you can distinguish between Automatons and regular Chaos Space Marines. Like Neal suggested this can be done either by relatively simple conversions of simply by a slightly different color scheme.

Nice ideas and picture.
I've mounted the 10 core stands of 1000 Sons on square bases using the disc rider gunner (minus cape) as the Havoc in the centre and a mix of the old TSons marines, standard beakies and the odd Flamer or C.Squat torso on marine legs. Looking at the photo I think someone beat me to those ideas . I really like the Psyker on the stands...have to remember that one.
Maybe a more regular look for the automatons? I think I might try 4 standard marines and one C.Squat conv per base.
Thanks again for the tips and inspiration.
