After their sudden appearance in Warzone Patsayev, the 1st founding Iron Hands chapter Clan Kaargul deployed en mass to the surface with their machines of war. Protected under cover of their interceptors and gunships, a significant total consisting of squadrons of Stormtalon gaunship, they quickly took command of the Astartes ground forces.


Used by the Iron Hands as a close air support vehicle, they were primarily tasked in long range anti-armour and reconnaissance duties. Swift enough to engage most enemy aircraft, they also were equipped with heavy armament of Assault Cannons and Lascannons. A versatile vehicle, flights of Stormtalons were became a common sight protecting Space Marine assets on the battlefield.



Painters notes:
Man these puppies have been living in a box for something close to 3-4 years now. Gifted from some continental friends, I've long been putting them off. I decided that I wanted the heavy ground contingent to be Iron Hands. Not wanting to go the more typical "black" I wanted them to have a slightly distinct look from say Raven Guard or Black Templars and instead went with a metallic sheen to them (when you turn them through the light you can really pick it up). Started off with a base of AP Uniform Grey. A heavy drybrush of GW Runelord Brass was applied all over. Taking a page from Oynx, I applied Woodland Scenics Black liquid pigment (not diluted but I would pull water sitting on the pallet in order to achieve the consistencies I needed during application). Windows were picked out in a series of progressively lighter blues. Engines and thrusters are in VMA Gunmetal (finer pigments even when applied with a brush). Weapons and tech gribblies and parts of the airfoil are GW mithril silver for a very clean metal look. I added some dubiously sourced decals from China off eBay to finish things up. Looking at them now I think I might go back and add a few hazard stripes for giggles.

The Griffon remains the most frequently-employed variant of the Chimera chassis. While some Imperial commanders have increasingly allowed the Griffon to become something of a relic, the Tallarn Light Raider regiments find them superbly suited for their hit and run techniques. Its heavy mortar is excellent against infantry and light vehicles, freeing heavier artillery for use against more appropriate targets, and can maintain a high rate of fire. The vehicle is also capable of keeping pace with rapid advances for which heavier vehicles like the Basilisk are too slow to maintain. By the closing days of what later historians referred to as "The Tallarn Dispersal", over 2000 Griffon Mortar Carriers, such as these examples from the Tallarn 892nd Rangers, were part of the bulk landing waves of reinforcements from Imperial Crusade Command.

Man oh man I just love these models. I've long ignored the griffon in EA as I just couldn't see a use for it but working on the Tallarn list with Apoc has seen me converted and I immediately went out and bought some packages off ebay. For this support formation I was certain I wanted a North African campaign feel to the colors so Tallarn it was! I gave them a solid base of VMA IDF Sand Grey. Once dry a zenithal highlight of a mixture of VMA Sand Yellow and Gold Yellow was applied, just to bring out the tones (odd that it works as the sand yellow is a darker paint but trust me it works ).

I knew I wanted a camo pattern but needed to keep away from the tiger stripes that I used to represent the Azov formations. S instead I went with a series of softly curved wide bands done in in a base of VMA Grey Green. I touched the bands up with a bit of drybrushing of GW battlegrey and some AP Uniform Grey. To further make it pop I then went back and gave them a bold outline in VMC Silver White. By using a sandy yellow-tan and then a grey green camo band these vehicles help further visually bridge the Grey Green main force with the allied support formations. Add in the strong white banding and it echos the blocks of white colors on the main force as well.

Great work jimmy. I love the light colour edging the dark colour on the camo. It looks great.
Personally I would have done the light blue on the spotlight towards the bottom, and put a little white dot at the top, but there is nothing wrong with the way yours is done. Variety is the spice of life after all!
Excellent work.
Gryphons are great in guard armies. I need to get myself some actual models.

ha funny you noticed that. I actually forgot to paint it and sat it down on the lightbox just a bit ago and went "shit" and grabbed a brush and dabbed from blues on really quick. Once done I went, "crap...upside down!"

Yes very much. I almost never base anything without the airbrush anymore. I've been wanting to switch to airbrushing my oil washes too but I'm a wee bit scared to yet. Perhaps I should go get a $20 beater brush and test it out.
