Well considering the raging success my ToEG 2012 was [insert sarcasm and snarky remarks] I'm committed to making better progress on my projects this year. So part of that is keeping a new log to help motivate me (read shame myself publicly :) ) on TacComs.

So at the moment I've got two WIP

Image
The first is the indoctrination of the next generation. I figure that perhaps if he can paint along with poppa then my hobby time is quality family time, right? that's how it works? :D So I got the eldest a POS busted up predator and a batch of tempera paint.

here's the happy painter done with his first paint job (just in time for it to go get washed up for next time)

As to me I'm currently working on scenery as I'm sick of all the unpainted buildings and hills laying around in the man cave. Currently on the bench is an Ad Mech factory, all bombed out that'll go great on a table. She's all based and highlighted (wayyy too much edge highlighting for my health :) ) and is ready for serious weathering and effects before being mounted (other than the Ad Mech symbol which s waiting for a good hour free to concentrate on it and obligatory hazard stripes). Here's some wip pictures for now.

Love the little nurgling, and his Rhino...

I use Kinder toys (preferably Disney princesses, but to my surprise Transformer robots work too) to secure "us" some quality time. To my surprise, colours like Squid pink and Warlock purple are suddenly running low.

Minor updates. Haven't had much chance to spend on this guy during the week (round of the sickness going through the kids). Hopefully this can be rectified today.

Got the Ad Mech symbol based with brass, highlighted with some gold, washed with a few rounds of sepia, and aged with green ink + torquose paint wash to simulate verdigris. The skull actually is completely flat without any definition other than the general shape so I just blended up Astronomicon grey to white to give the illusion of shape and texture. A good start so far though I am not sure if I want to jewel the eye or not. Opinions?

Basic weathering of streaked Devlan mud and second smaller wash of badab black to start things off with. Will move onto weathering powders probably today.

Nice weathering, and painting. Inspiring to see people actually caring about painting scenery. up close the damage looks a bit coarse modelling wise, maybe this will soften with pigments.

Decided to go a bit further with this than originally anticipated. I decided to build out the ruined factory floor and fill it all sorts of fun debris and left over busted up equipment. Here's the flooring:

Blew out the middle with the classic toilet paper paper mache crater walls coupled with various bits (broken pipes, conduit, broken flooring, rubble aka kitty litter - unused mind you :D), I -beams, etc. Charcoal was liberally slapped on the edges all around and then coloring added. VGC desert yellow, very thin, just irregularly sloshed and slapped on. It really gives a nice effect IMO put directly on textured polysty sheet (Evergreen plastics, oh how love thee) and by edging first with the charcoal it gives a dirty feel to the corners where naturally dirt and grim would have originally built up in the factory. A very fast easy trick to add some depth to your buildings, so there you go. Some Chardon granite followed up by even lighter amounts of Codex grey were irregularly dry brushed on to finish the work and blend it all in.

I'll need to let this dry for at least another day before I texturize and then paint the craters.

WIP shot of it all together:

While that's drying onto something completely different.

Factory is looking good. Weathering is spot on. I would´t jewel the eye, might make it too fancy.

agree, jewels are the first things to be looted as well....

looking really good! I wish I could trust my son to *just* paint the miniatures in front of him and not the carpet/walls/floors/his clothes too.....

I'm going to call the flooring done. The pigments took right to the blast marks grandly. Mig better than FW powders anyday I'll admit.

(random factory bits will be added once I mount the walls).
Really going to have my work cut out for me with the weathering pigments to catch the walls up with the floor. Good thing I got a bottle of vino here for me tonight. :D

What's the source for the terrain elements?

The large pipes, floor tile, and I-Beams are from Evergreen.

Craters are your classic paper mache (TP + elemers school glue + water)

There's snips of wire and the plastic covers from my bits box thrown in to boot for the smaller pipes / conduits.

Soon to be added are crates and barrels from Exodus Wars and some hacked up random tech bling from Firestorm Armada.
