Dear all

I need your input & help on what to do with the bases for my upcoming chaos army. It's going to be BL, some daemons, nothing special.

I wanted to go for a ash waste/rubble (=ruins/cityfight) kind of design (i.e. sand, grey, light drybrush), but I also want it to be chaos-looking. I was thinking maybe

x) bones & skulls
x) lava (or something similar - not goo though because it's not going to be Nurgle)

but I need more ideas, because I'm not sure how to do bones/skulls (not a sculptor), and I don't like lava too much....

please help me out on this! :)

another thing: does anyone have good suggestions on alternative Chaos Daemon Beast miniatures - I figure the dog-like creatures on the sprue are beasts, but there's only 6 to one box :(

cheers,
M

I have been thinking about basing my chaos army differently also.

Lava sounds like a doable thing (and maybe you'd like it more if it turned out looking good) I was thinking painting up the minis, cutting bases out of styrene, then putting wall patch on the bases, running a knife through the wall patch and while it was still soft press the minis into it. When the plaster dries paint it dark grey, wash black, orange with yellow highlight in the cracks. I dunno it might be a crazy amount of work.

Perhaps a more rational way would be base painted black, orange/red.yellow cracks painted on, glue on finished minis, white glue over black painted areas, dip in black fine model railroad gravel?

As for the various demonic creatures check out the warmaster line. The chaos sculpts for it are interesting and still have the 'correct' appearance fluff wise. Who's to really say what a 10mm scale demon would look like to a Epic/6mm scale demon, kinda subjective, esp. once they are on a gaming table.
I have also been looking at some Reaper 28mm sculpts for the 'greater demons' They have some real interesting looking demonic figures.

Another possible idea for the bases. Jjust do what you said with the ash look, and perhaps obtain photo etched enochian letters to scatter on the base, painted in themed colors for the deity that's patron to the demons on the base. I really need to get a laser printer as there is so much that could be done for this scale/game with photoetching.

how about blighted forest - tree stumps, corpses ect?

Evil temple - spikes and tiled floor. Tiles in the shape of arrows for bonus points.
despolied world - basically a mud base

I've been mulling over in my head for awhile about how to add skulls to bases, the idea i came up with but have yet to test it is using beach sand glued to bases, then painting them red and dry brushing bleached bone then skull white on top. to give it the look as the the army is walking threw a bloody mass of skulls. i got the inspiration from the khorne tower of skulls for 40k. ill test it and try and post a picture

Image
picture quality sucks because my camera on my phone isnt to hot, hope this gives an ok example of what i was trying to explain.
