I've decided to take the easy option for the ToEG09 challenge, and paint up an AMTL army that I was planning to do anyway.

I originally decided to to a Titan Legions army when thinking about possible future Imperial Guard and/or Space Marine armies. It occurred to me that taking a full complement of Titans for either or both armies would come to 2000 points (850+650+500), and if I were to do those those then it wouldn't take much more before I had a viable army of Titans anyway. Plus it would give me an opportunity to dig my old Imperator out of the cupboard and use it in a game or two.

So a few weeks ago, I got out the Imperator. I got it second hand (swapped for a Blood Bowl model I think) about ten or eleven years ago, and it has always been missing a few parts. The lascannon on the left shoulder is absent, as are the heavy bolter turrets around the corners. I've replaced the Lascannon with an aerial from some BFG ships, but I've just left the turrets. Since these weapons are absorbed into the Titan's 'tertiary armaments' under the current rules, I don't think they're essential.

The old paint job, started by the previous owner and finished off by me, was never very good, so I repainted the model. I also added a base, made from an 80mm Mini-CDR.

So that's the army so far, which I don't intend to count towards ToEG09. What do I plan to add? I'm currently thinking of something along these lines:

August: 2 x Warhounds (550 points, or 500 if taken as a pair)
September: Reaver and Forge Knights (slightly over the limit at 1050 points)
October: Warlord and Thunderbolts (just in at 1000 points)
November: Reaver and another Warhound (925 points)
December: Reaver and Forge Knights (over again at 1050 points)

Those point values are all assuming standard weapons configurations, which in practice they won't all be, so the points might vary slightly from those. I haven't decided for certain what configurations I do want, though, so I've just assumed standard points costs for now. I also reserve the right to deviate from those plans, depending on what models I can afford to get, and just how the mood takes me.

Wow, that's a really effective colour scheme and not one ive seen before.

Any plans for supporting skitarii and vehicles to go with them? or will this be provided by the marines and guards that they are going to be used with?

Just a plain Titan Legions army for the moment. I might do some Tech-Guard at some point, but probably not until after I've done a few other armies first.

I feel your pain with the incomplete imperator, I bought one from ebay that was in all kinds of trouble. Some people buy cars and renovate them, I do the same with 6" tall titans   There's something quite satisfying about undoing the years of neglect

Good luck buddy, and I dont think we should feel we're cheating if we stray over the 1000 pt mark. More the merrier I say.

Good luck buddy

Cheers.

Well, I've painted up one Warhound, which puts me half way to this month's target.

I'll probably do another one next week. In the meantime, I have more Chaos Marines to paint.

The small clumps of snow on the base work well with the small areas of white on the titans :agree:

Nice! Simple yet very striking (and original!) the warhound in particular looks very sleek and deadly with those colours, keep 'em coming

Yeah, that was kind of a happy accident, really. The basic idea was to try and find a compromise between the snow-covered bases I had in mind for the Guard and the dry-ground-and-patchy-grass I was thinking of for the marines, since if I'm going to use these Titans with both of those armies then they'll all need to be based the same.

Of course, it's entirely possible I'll never actually get around to doing either army (especially the Marines), so it may not matter in the end, but the bases seem to work for the Titans anyway, so I'm not too worried.

That white is whiter than white, it'd definitely pass the Daz doorstep challenge!

Is that over a black undercoat and if so how have you done it?

Yeah, it's over a black undercoat. I start with a layer of Citadel Skull White, then add another layer, then another, and so on until either a) it looks clean and bright, b) I'm sick of painting more layers, or c) if I put any more paint on it'll get all blobby and horrible-looking. There may well be a better way, but I don't know what it is. The important thing is making sure each layer is smooth and even, because if it isn't, each subsequent layer makes the problem worse.

The photos are actually quite flattering to the white areas. With the rest of the model fairly dark, they get quite heavily exposed, which helps disguise any slight unevenness.

If you'd like an easier white, I recommend gw astronomican grey (foundation paint) then one or two layers of skull white. I have yet to need a third or sometimes even a second layer using this.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks. I've mostly been busy with my Chaos Space Marines, but this army isn't forgotten, and I have now painted up another Warhound:

And here it is in a pack with the other one:

That brings me up to my (admittedly very modest) target for this month of 550 points (or 500 if I take them as a pack). I'm not sure yet whether I'll stick to the schedule for next month or do the Warlord next and a Reaver the month after. Or I might even go nuts and do two battle titans next month, who knows?

Oh, and I tried painting the white over Astronomican Grey as you suggested, olly, and although it worked fairly well, I'm not sure it was that much easier to get a good finish than with just white. Took about three layers of paint either way. Would've made shading easier, though, if it was on a more complex surface and I hadn't been going for such a flat, plain-white finish.

It lives! This army isn't dead, it was just resting. It was put on something of a back-burner while I worked on my Chaos Marines, but they're all done now. There was also something of a delay while I waited for an order from GW. Along with a couple of Reaver Titans, I'd ordered some spare 40mm round bases, which were out of stock and meant that it took over three weeks for the order to be dispatched. It's arrived now, though, so I can resume this project just in time to get it back on schedule.

So the next unit in this army is a standard-configuration Warlord Titan:

When I got this model the card disc from the base was missing, so I fashioned a replacement out of some plasticard. The small gun turrets on the back are lance batteries from BFG ships. I'd have liked to have stuck with purely old-school parts, but I didn't like the holes in the back of the carapace and didn't have enough banner poles to fill them all (and wasn't that keen on them anyway) so I decided to make an exception here.

This model was all finished and painted a week or two ago, except for the Turbo-lasers, which I didn't have until I took them from one of the Reavers that arrived yesterday. I had been going to replace them with a pair of Quake Cannons that I scratch-built a couple of weeks back, but on getting the model I discovered that they were far too big. Consequently I've assembled that Reaver with a Volcano Cannon and Gatling Blaster instead, and the QC-equipped Reaver will have to wait until I can find some suitable weapons.

Coming next will be a standard-configuration Reaver Titan, which will bring my total for this month up to 1500 points. I've decided to revise my previous schedule, since 500-1000 points a month seemed a bit feeble in an AMTL army. The new plan is this:

August: 2 x Warhounds (550 individually or 500 as a pair) - DONE
September: Warlord (850), Reaver (650) - (1500)
October: Reaver (675), Warhound (275), Forge Knights (400) - (1350)
November: Reaver (725), Warhound (275), Thunderbolts (150) - (1150)
December: Warlord (800), Forge Knights (400) - (1200)

It remains to be seen when Forge World will have their Thunderbolts back in stock, so there may be some revision to this schedule yet. Also, I'm still not completely certain about the weapons on that second Warlord. I'm currently thinking of going for a cheap(-ish) combination of two Gatling Blasters, an Apocalypse Rocket Launcher and a Laser Burner, but is that likely to be any good? The other combo I was considering was a Laser Blaster, Gatling Blaster, Turbolaser and Support Missile for 900 points, but that's a pretty expensive Titan and I'm not certain whether or not it's worth it.
