Another Stompa mod.

I didn't have the heart to nick the weedy saw arm because retro is good and it's bigger at scale than the goofy looking 40K model.  The guns, however, are a bit on the silly side for this older model, so they got some enhancements.

And now for something completely different.

If you've spent any time on military modelling forums in the past few years, you will have inevitably run into color modulation as one of the newer techniques. HERE is an example of how this plays out on (much) larger vehicles. While I haven't yet seen true color modulation put into practice on anything in 40K-related forums, I thought it would be fun to give it a shot at Epic scale.

I started with a black undercoat and airbrushed a simple modulated basecoat with a couple of greys & white. From there, I ran a few layers of brown over the model and then followed up with simple weathering & glyphs.

While the modulation isn't 100% correct and the weathering occluded the effect in spots, I'm still pleased with how the mini came out. I'll refine the next few models and see how that works.

I'm not entirely sure what you are doing here. It looks like you basically use the grays and white to create the shading effect before actually colorizing the vehicle with either glazes or washes thin enough to keep the shading created from the first step. Is this correct?

If it is, then it's basically what I've been doing with my IG though with a much quicker effect using a drybrush for the white and washes of black to shade a gray basecoat before washing with the color I want.

I hadn't heard of colour modulation, but just been goolging about and to me it looks like its NMM theory but on whole areas (eg over simulation of the play of light on the mini to compensate for scale). I looks interesting, just shadow-> normal-> highlight but on flats not detail in the same way you'd do on a 28mm or bigger display fig. However, while you ork tank looks absolutely stunning, especially the weathering, im not really picking up the colour modulation within the camouflage/it looks like cammo stripe variation not the gradation of a single colour, its seems to work well in the first stage and then be far far less noticeable on your finished item.

hmm sorry if that sounds a bit negative, the final thing looks stunning im just trying to understand it. :)

Yep Vaaish, that's basically it for this model. ;) Subsequent models will actually be done in gradients of color over black versus just as an undercoat. The advantage is really the smooth transitions & it is completely overkill for a Gunwagon. ;D

Larger models, like Gargants, are a far better target for this sort of thing, but if I can strike a balance on the weathering, the model will "pop" more because you will see the base layer more clearly. As Apoc pointed out, the weathering was a bit OTT & obscured much of the effect.

Thankfully, it's really quick work with an airbrush and it gives me an excuse to get better on airbrushing tiny stuff.

Got around to repainting some Nobz for my Deff Spydaz. I tried to impart more Snakebitey flavor and keep with the dags & earthy colors.

Some of the banners might look a bit more like ticks than spiders, but it's a learning process. ;D

Look great, your weathering is top class, as always.

Working on a group of 4 dreadz currently. Trying to keep the painting & the look simpler as I don't see Snakebites as a flashy group that uses lotsa paint in purdy kolors. :P

The dread on the right is where I start before detailing. From a white undercoat it's basically thinned gunmetal base > black wash > rust pigment wash > gunmetal overbrush.

For lack of anything more original, Your weathering effects are beautiful! How long does it take to paint one of those tanks?

It took weeks if you factor in work & family, but the actual painting probably only took a little over two hours. Airbrushing was pretty simple & I just used blutack to mask, which made things go quickly. Doing a few models at a time wouldn't really take that much longer provided the airbrush anti-clog gods were smiling. :)

I want to try for a more visible modulation effect on the next test, so it might take a bit longer to get the model's appearance where I want it.

It's good to be home. :D

More fun with airbrushing.
Here's the 2nd go around at this Stompa. Just basecoated with no real weathering or detail as of yet. 3 color base to hopefully give the model some depth.

Hi

"Def sydas", heh heh love it.

I still haven't managed to come up with a name for a new ork clan yet, let alone a colour scheme. The big teef clan is a working project at the mo.Mainly because an ork tooth is easy for me to paint on banners and tanks etc.(tis my level of skill)

Yours look REALLY Really good.
