Thanks folks! Full disclosure, I had my first major hobby accident with these guys. I always photograph before I varnish the models but due to some poorly placed cardboard I managed to flip both models onto the concrete garage floor. I did partially catch them on the way down but it was still enough to have one break off at the ankles and lose an arm and the other have both legs crack off at the hip and base. A few hours of fixing later they are back to the pre-fall state so that's good :)

It's been a long while since I got something to post. Just finished up these Custodes today and got pics. It's been a lot longer and a lot harder than I anticipated to do up the gold and take useful pics of it. Looks far better in person when you start moving around and seeing the light reflect.

Great job! I agree gold is difficult to paint and photograph. After much experimentation I took photos in a semi darkened room and then brought the levels back up in Photoshop.

What gold paints are you using?

Thanks, I probably should have tried that for the pics. Gold is a weird one, to the eye the lighting was good but the final shots were a paint to level correctly without too much burnout even from the RAW files.

For the gold it's less that you would expect. :P It's all based with an old pot of Balor Brown mixed with black. Highlights are brought up with Vallejo Old Gold. Further highlights are Old Gold mixed with Mithril and final touches being Mithril Silver.

The other issue I found is the flakes are quite big in GW metalic Gold. Certainly Burnished and Shining Gold, anyway. This meant small models like infantry looked messy close up, as the flakes are a distraction. I found Vallejo Model Air was better because the flakes are much smaller - they have to be for airbrush. Vallejo do Game Air these days, so that might match the GW Gold.

I literally spent weeks trying to find a Gold I felt worked on 6mm infantry, and then a photo that did the models justice. Unfortunately I used my Italian Sanguinary Guard along the way...

I agree about the flakes. The normal Vallejo can be a bit challenging to get right and doesn't thing out too well at times. It's less noticeable with the golds, but pretty obvious with the silvers. I've heard good things about the model air line due to the smaller flecks but I haven't had opportunity to pick it up.
