This has come up a couple of times lately (Tyranid list allowing Titans to garrison is most notable).

Should War Engines count as a single Unit for garrison purposes (meaning you could Garrison an 8DC Titan by adding a single scout unit to the formation), or should it count as its number of DC for Garrison purposes (meaning you could Garrison an 8DC Titan by adding 8 scout units to the formation)?

RAW implies the former, but RAW also says that War Engines should only roll 1 dice when Teleporting, and that got FAQ'd to say they roll 1 dice per point of DC.

So uhm, what do people think?

I think by default WE should cont as 1 thing per DC they have. They already do for most things (attacks, outnumbering, teleporting) so why not this too? And make it the same for dangerous terrain too. No reason a warhound is less likely to trip up in the woods than a formation of 3 smaller walkers.
With the sudden influx of new players at the London club, it's a pain to have to explain rules and then list all the exceptions.

It helps not only writing new lists but also as a general rule of thumb that's easier to remember. 1DC counts as 1 unit for everything. Boom, learned. Then that particular ork formation can have a note since it's the exception.

I've never actually seen anyone garrison a Fortress.

As far as I can tell it'd cost 600pts to be able to do it, and the resultant formation would be pretty awful!

Ditto.

I know it CAN be done. But I'm not sure that I'd WANT to. Seems a bit drastic to me, without being that wise.
Still, sure I'd eat my hat once I'd seen it in action...

A garrisoned Fortress with mob inside can assault quite far, especially if the unwary opponent puts the TnH objective near the center-line; a mistake he is unlikely to repeat :)

It is also easily countered or neutered.

Asking the question in reverse, how many lists would be boosted if WE only counted as 1 unit for garrisoning purposes?

Yes, but to do so the boyz need to be loaded in the 'fortress - hardly the safest place considering how fragile they are...

Also, as garrisons are deployed before regular formations you have the chance to setup some thing to deal with them before they can yell "surprise!!!" and leap out.

Meh. Maybe it's just too tactical for me :)

The Boyz don't need to start mounted, most a Kommandos and have infiltrate, the real risk comes from doubling 50cm automatically right into your opponents deployment zone, throwing a tonne of shooting dice and supporting an air assault.

All true. But if the boyz aren't mounted then the reach of the formation is great reduced, no?
Also, ton of dice sure, but most of it on 7's and only a single formation can be targeted

Seems a bit too risky for me, but then, he who dares and all that.

Cheers Rug

Edit: corrected the unhelpful auto-corrects

Yea, but not against me - I wouldn't be able to stand the irony!
