Is it right to take paint stuff on a cruise?

So, I'm going on an Alaskan cruise in the upcoming week (thanks, grandpa!). There's lots of shore excursions planned, yet there is a day of 'at sea' and some long evenings in travel.

Is it right to pack a few models (plastic paladin knights) and some painting material?

And yes, this is why I posted by Bloody Colmar post earlier in the week.

Also, I plan on catching an otter with my bare hands and eating it raw. Gotta earn my Indian name!

I have no idea if security is as strict for cruiseship as it is for flying. On a commercial flight you almost certainly wouldn't be able to carry paint on board. I'd give the cruise line a call. I'm sure they can answer your question.

The "ethical" part may depend on who is going with you (if anyone), and how much they expect you to be part of their "entertainment" during the day at sea and long evenings.

If the cruise line permits and you have space, I say bring it.  It is better to have something to do and never get around to it, than to be stuck with nothing to do.

As long as it's not in the spray variety, bring it along!

That said don't waste the entire cruise painting. It can be great fun to watch the waves go by...
And be sure tell us how the otter tastes! :)

If you are going to be with a friend (especially a girlfriend) or a wife, bringing paints will indicate that you do not want to spend free time with her.  This is clearly a bad thing to do (whether it is true or not).

Also, I went on a cruise when I was 8 years old and it still stands out in my memory as one of the great family vacations.  Do yourself a favor and leave the paints behind.

Lastly, with the global warming thing going on, this may be the last time you get to see Alaska with glaciers and snow - the next time you go it may be pitched as the Cancun of the 21st Century.  Bring binoculars, bring a bathing suit and hang with the chicks in the pool, hang out with the elderly doing shuffle board, bring a journal and write stupid stuff down about how the nice-but-chubby waitress kept flirting with you, how you lost your sunglasses when a gust of wind blew them off your face, whatever happens to happen.

Trust me, there is no reason to have free time on a cruise.  Have a great time and purge your brain.

I wouldn't take paint.

I am, however, going to spend next week on the beach and I plan to take several printouts of Epic stuff to work on, along with my normal assortment of reading materials.

Well you are our unofficial unelected leader, Neal.  We would expect nothing less from you. :D

FYI, playing a game on a beach is not as good of an idea as it sounds.

So, I got back from the cruise ship a couple of weeks ago. Let's say that's not my preferred way of vacationing. However, the stomps around the glacier and the rain forests were pretty neat, albeit expensive.

The prior picture was taken from the cruise ship. It's the Marjorie glacier, 250 feet tall.
