Hi!

Not wanting to leave Maksim alone, I'll also start an info thread.

Well the acquisition of a home as bogged down and recently gone "poof." The seller for whatever reasons got cold feet and wanted out. Having gotten fed up with his delays and stall tactics, I was pretty much happy to end the transaction and get my deposit back. Bummer though, the house was really nice and had a great view. I guess I will not know what it is to be a home owner just yet...

It's an irony of life that in the place I least expected I found my veritable "dream job." I never intended to return to Puerto Rico. It has a lot of things I dislike as far as the culture and behavior of its people. But having my father kick the bucket and having to take care of mom and the family business (small scale grocery store) needed me back. After those affairs were done I took a job in the metro area of the island. It sucked. Bad pay, overworked, unhappy.

Fortunately opportunity came in 7 months of being there. A job showed up in the rural "mountain" hospital on the island. I took it since I knew I had to dump my old job. Plus this job offered me a 20%+ increase in salary...

Sometimes you make decisions and don't think much about them. This one turned out to be very, very good. My average hours are from 9am to 3pm, Monday through Friday. I don't work weekends, don't take call, don't do autopsies or gynecological cytology (PAP smear, I hate those!). I only do surgical pathology (mostly cancer), which is my specialty area.

People are very friendly and polite here which is also refreshing. I will have been at my current job for almost two years (in April), I had another salary increase after my first year (I make nearly 30k more than my previous job) and I will negotiate a contract come April, hopefully long term (I'm shooting for a ten year contract).

So oddly, I may wind up living here in Puerto Rico permanently. Which I never thought woold happen. But I'm actually happy with my job (a first). The administration has been giving us equipment to make our job more efficient, which is good.

I guess you can say I'm living a sort of "golden age" now. Things are good. Especially since more than three years ago things were not so good. I guess that's why I actually painted recently. I feel life stable enough to relax and do such things.

I'm not quite sure what to do in regards to a home. I could build, but that has a slew of problems. Buying should be easier, but my wife and I are real nitpicky Cads when it come to this, so a suitable home for sale has become a rarity.

The last thought was to wait until our older child is 16 (a mere three years away!) so he can get a drivers liscence and then we would buy a home closer to my job in the rural mountains (which my wife and I like) and let the older kid drive himself to school.

My only two worries nowadays is the upcoming renegotiation of my contract and my specialty boards in June.

I tend to stress a lot on such things, so I guess I'll be all bent out of shape until Summer... ?:p

Primarch.

Hi Peter,

It's good to hear from you. I understand.

I think that it's stuff like this that makes us a good community. We share and support each other the best we can over the electronic distances.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Primarch,

It's nice to know you are in Puerto Rico, a friend of mine, moved down there thanks to his job.

My family is planning to go down for a visit some time in the next year or so.

Maybe we can meet up and get in a game or two.
(My wife says that it is a little far for a regular game night)

I understand about the woes of home ownership, I was looking for five years just to finally get one last april.
(and just three months after we moved in, my mother in law moved in)

Anyways, I am glad you have found a good position, it is always a blessing when that happens.

best regards

Dalton

Hi!

What part of Puerto Rico you visiting?

The island isnt that big, so most places are hardly what I'd consider far.....

...especially when a game of epic is to be had..... :;):

You should be picky when buying a house, it is not like you can just get rid of it easily (in most cases) if there is a problem.  Lesson I learned with my first house.  So be patient, and one will come your way.  :)

Hi Primarch

Bad luck with the house- better luck on your next attempt. Having previously been on the property ladder and now off it again (London UK is SO expensive) I am still trying to save up myself to get back on track.

Don't forget you will need a massive room for that rather small dining table of yours. plus strong foundations to cope with thewight of lead, plastic and resin the next time we get to see a group shot of part of the Primarchload.

Plus preferably a bunk house to cope with the dozen or so mad gamers particpiating in the annual Epiccomms outing to Peurto Rico!!

Good luck

Cheers

James

I went through two houses before we got one to buy. It is hard at times. But, just like the job, when the right house comes along, you will be so very happy.
