I am sure a lot of you are like me: always on the look out for a good deal or hidden gem for your hobby. I recently found one and it got me thinking about what sort of things you had found at conventions, garage sales, garbage bins, etc. It can be rare, it can be cheap, or a combination of the two. Share!

I'll get things started. I recently bought a large (35lb) box of Titan Legion/Space Marine era stuff from a fellow who was cleaning out his basement. I'm more of a collector/painter than gamer, so I love sorting through the stuff and deciding what to keep, but so far I have found 2 mega gargants, an imperator (on sprue), 7 beetleback warlords, 3 old metal great gargants, 2 slasha gargants, a phantom, and a warhound. And that isn't counting vehicles or infantry (some of which are still in blisters).

So what treasures or deals have you found over the years?

2nd hand sales:

1. Horus Heresy + Doom of the Eldar + Armageddon for AUS$70.00. They went missing for a year but then a mate called me up to tell me he had them at his place. These are one of my most treasured finds

2. When I first started epic I bought a big box of Epic for AUS$70.00 that another guy passed on and it had unopened starter boxes for Chaos x2, Imperial Guard x3, Many Ork and Eldar boxes, Banelord titans, tons of marines, eldar and orks, as well as some terrain sprues. Probably the best deal that I ever stumbled upon and still forms a large part of my collection.

3. Seated Genestealer Patriarch with Magus and familiars (40K) for AUS$40

Store buy:

Realm of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned - AUS$70 umpteen years ago and I have never regretted it.

I guess $70 has played a big part in my finds for some apparant reason. Did not realise it till I posted this - very strange...

I've had some pretty good ones over the years.

A MiB Imperator that I traded for a WM Dwarf army box I bought for $5. I also got two packs worth of EA Preds for another $5 Dwarf army box.

46 MkI Chimera variants and 22 MkI/MkII Russes for $105 (I'm pretty sure I sold off what I didn't want and made a slight profit here too).

$274 worth of MiB EA Guard for $85 (that stuff got passed along to Matt for his Guard army).

I traded some old RAFM Heavy Gear gears (I think I paid $85-90 for them total) for 4 MkII Warlords, 2 MkIII Warlords, a bunch of Titan weapons, 3 StormHammers and some more super-heavies, 2 Ordantus and the parts for a Warmonger. I also think I sold what I didn't want here again and broke even.

PG also helped me complete my Marine army, I got a bunch of bikes and other stuff from him for $5 a blister.

Finally, I also got some great deals on eBay through Centurian (a whole mess of SM/TL IG and Eldar spring to mind). I'm pretty sure some of that went back to him too 3 years later. :P

a bit over a year ago, i was up in sydney for an Infinity tournament. there was a decent sized Buy Swap And Sell table set up to one side. I wandered over there before the games started, and saw a big box slightly overflowing with epic stuff (by big boxes, it was an apple crate, so about 2ft x 1-1/2ft x 1ft)
i could see within it, a bunch of cards and rulebooks from the old SM/TL era. which was to my mind, the best edition of the game. I'd wanted to play it for some time, infact a banner of the imperator titan was what first got me interested in the hobby, but when i first came into the hobby i was too young to appreciate the scale properly (plus perhaps more importantly, none of my friends played it) and by the time i was keen for it, they had pulled it. e:40k made me feel sad, so for years i had given up on epic. recently, i'd been starting to get keen again. anyways back to the story.
so theres a big old box of stuff i am quite interested in. i ask the guy behind the desk how much for the stuff as it did not have a pricetag unlike so much else. (knowing in all likelyhood that as a poor student, i cannot afford it)
he says "i actually dont know. its stuff the club used to own. i'll check with the guys and get back to you.
heart sinking, i wander off to my games. midway through the second game, a guy taps me on my shoulder. asking if i was the guy who wanted to buy the epic stuff. directed back to the desk, the man awaits me and says "we've talked about it, and here's the deal. it'll cost you $30 but you have to take it all."
no hesitation later (well, there was some "did i hear him right?") i grabbed the box and took it away. at that price, there was no way i even needed to look into the box to see what was there. apparently it had been on the sale rack for the last 3 years, and i was the only one in that time to ask about it...
that night, in my hotel room, i pulled it appart and discovered:
a fair chunk of space marines, about 5-8k points worth in the current scheme several of the original thunderbricks and a few of the mk2 thunderhawks, another model i had longed for as a child). rules cards and templates from most of the expansions (including hivewar, it lacked renegades, but had squat and ork warlords) a large bunch of metal ork vehicles and several gargants of varying size (but very little ork infantry) a bunch of IG superheavies, an few knights (including a couple of metal ones, but mainly plastic)
and an imperator titan!* hurrah for childhood dreams fulfilled.

(*it wasnt pristine, the paint job was pretty fierce in a not good way, and one of its arms had been converted into a big double-barreleld cannon, but still. it was an imperator titan.
which brings me to my other good deal. late last year, at another tournament i met a dude, and while talking about games of various sorts, he mentioned he had an imperator titan he was considering selling off. my ears perked up, he'd previously discussed an interest in the plastic cogs i had used iin my army for the tournament (my Necrorks, can be found in the 28mm gallery for those interested) which i had acquired for free at my old place of work (they came from inside printers, which i dismantled) so naturally, i suggested a trade. i would provide him with a bunch of cogs, and some money, and he would provide me with his imperator. he declined the money, saying the cogs would be sufficient.
this one was pretty much perfect, one of the spikes on the top tower had broken, and it was primed and drybrushed brass, but otherwise untouched. but a proper imperator titan, which i still hold rather irrational love for** total cost? free!)

(** i now own 4, almost bought 2 more from steve54, but was able to restrain myself. the original one and another ratty one i picked up will be chaosed up, the two more pristine ones will be centerpieces when i get around to painting up my now quite considerable titan legion)

These are great stories! There is something really cool about finding a bargain or other deal that no one else had found (or, to be honest, wanted...).

I have had 3 great deals in the past couple of years. 1st, a local fellow who had been working up in the North West Territories mentioned a store there that had lots of old models, including a "big titan." I gave the store a call and it turns out that it was a Warmonger, still in the box and on sprue. It even has a set of badly photocopied instructions! I haven't built it yet, but I can't wait to do so when I have the room.

About a year-and-a-half ago, another local guy was selling off a "big box of epic stuff" for $50. I bought it and found all sorts of good stuff, including all the models from the E:40k box set, a gargant, no fewer than 4 metal warhounds, and a ton of other metal E:40k models. I kept a bunch for myself and sold enough to cover my initial outlay 4 times over.

And most recently is the box that I mentioned in the first post. It was literally 35lbs when it arrived at my door from a fellow in Texas who was cleaning out his basement. He had pictures that he mentioned on a forum, so I offered to help him identify it all. When I saw the pictures, I just had to make an offer. He was great about it (he wanted them to go to someone who would use them), so I ended up paying $200 (including shipping). It came with the titans I listed above, all of the cards, books, and buildings from SM/TL era, and full forces of Squats, Orks, Marines (with extras of IG, Chaos, and Eldar). I'm having a great time sorting through it (look for a bunch of it to go up in the trade forum in a bit).

The death of Epic 3rd edition, while a real shame, really boosted my stores of miniatures. Many of the GW stores local to me at the time were desperately clearing out their Epic stock, and GW Mail Order were doing the same. This lead to all the large, double sprues of Epic infantry being £1.50 each online, and I got lots. I still have most, including over 10 sprues of Tyranids, and 10 of Chaos. The stores had the blister packs at £1, and I picked up so many that the guy on the counter couldnt be bothered to count them and just said that there are about 60 there and charged £60 for the lot. Included were several Land Raider Commander blisters, previous Thunderhawks, more Eldar Command blisters than I know what to do with and loads of Imperial tanks. In the end, I grabbed a box - one of those that the old GW games were delivered in from GW - and put the blisters in there, managing to get 6x4x4 blisters fit in, and onlly got about 2/3 of the packs stored in there.

Mine was getting a part-time job with GW several years ago while doing my undergrad and finding I could mail order models ridiculously cheaply priced by the total weight for only around 10% of their normal prices (they stopped this since), even less for epic items which weighed very little. Needless to say I placed a huge order for a good couple of kilograms worth of epic, including 70 odd Exodites, a Psi-Titan and various other unreleased bits on sale at the time from US mail order. Best £80-100ish I ever spent (just wish I'd bought more Psi-Titans after selling my one recently for £217).

I was in Victoria, BC many years back on one of my weekend get outta town for a day trips...
I went to usual haunts and just before I was ready to leave and head home I popped into a used book store I liked to go to. They usually have some rare books and sometimes some old Gaming Rulebooks. I was looking through the stuff, not seeing much that I was evenly remotely interested in.
I guess the owner saw the sorta, 'this sucks' look on my face, he calls me over "I just got a bunch of stuff in, help me shelf some of it and I will give you a good deal."
I was like...I am so going to get suckered but...what the hell.
He helps me get the 5 Huge boxes out, first 2 boxes...D&D stuff, not interested, 3rd box...hey a few Gurps books that i want, and some hero system stuff...not bad. The last box...Adeptus Titanicus...original, all in the box..unpainted, even the old measuring rulers are there. I pull it up, Space Marine..same thing (at this point I nearly Plotz myself). Then a 2nd Edition Space marine, same Condition. Armies of the Imperium, Warlords, Renegades. Then a shoe box Jammed with Metal, all epic...some of it had some paint but most of it wasn't even assembles.
At this point I was like, no way...no way I am going to get this cheap, I tell him "well...i wouldn't mind all this stuff" he looks in the box, snorts "sure, you would be doing me a favor, i couldn't sell that stuff..$50 bucks and it is yours, and those rule books too" I had $50 bucks in his hand so fast i think I surprised him, Guess he was expecting to Haggle...I wasn't going to haggle.
I think i was cackling like a mad man as I was going out the door. I didn't even look thru it all till I got home, a drive that normally takes an hour and half felt like it 3 hours.

The metal consisted of a bunch of ork vehicles, most everything Squat, a bunch of old Eldar stuff, and a few Imperial guard Tanks.
I still have most of it, but have been trading off a few things as I need too....best find Gaming wise to this day....needless to say I always stop in that bookstore when in Victoria....Just in case....lightening can strike twice

Which store was it? It wouldn't happen to be Snowden's, would it? I always found some good RPG books there when I went to Victoria.

Great store, although I remember it being better when I was younger. We used to come down from our cabin on Shawnigan Lake for the day in the summer and I would hit Snowden's and all the game stores that used to be in that area. It was like heaven for a kid from the wilds of Eastern BC where you couldn't find any games at all.

Minor find for me this past weekend. Looking through the Used/Bargain bin drawers of a local game store, I came across a Necromunda Spyer Patriarch, NIB for $10 US. See those puppies go for crazy amounts on ebay.
