Not sure about art programs? Well, don't despair, there's plenty more art programs out there, some of which might suit you better than Photoshop, even!

I've used Paint Tool Sai and found it to be a great sketching program, only about £35:

https://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/

Then there's Manga Studio, which is about £30 normally but sometimes drops down on sale to only £10 or so:

There's also GIMP which is kind of a poor man's Photoshop - a GNU licensed affair I always have installed for quick scanning / levels adjustment of model photos I take or pencil drawings:

http://www.gimp.org/

One I haven't tried is Drawpile, which is meant to be a spiritual successor to the early Open Canvas programs which allowed multiple people to draw on a single canvas for fun over a net connection:

Then there's Open Canvas, haven't tried any of the latest versions myself but it is popular; it's about £40:

Squat Air-Land BattleImage

Once again I was commissioned to paint the two prizes for Epic-UK's Grand Tournament this year.

The Squats intrigue me as they are ripe for some modernisation. I love their oldy-worldy aesthetics, but some of their vehicles - especially the Gyrocopter need some work. I've kept the Colossus as it is, but with the Gyro I've added a helicopter-gunship-style cockpit and made the airframe more aerodynamic.

Painted in Photoshop CS1, took me around nine hours.

Lictor on the Hunt

This was the second pic I was asked to paint.

Painted in Photoshop CS1, took me around seven and a half hours.

Wow! That's cool. Which one did you get?

I'm glad to hear you've got two other examples of my work too. :D

Cheers.

No I did not. I'd have loved to though. To be honest I've not really had much chance to do many commissions of late. :(

I've recently migrated to using Painter from Photoshop. This is my first serious attempt at getting a final picture out of the program. I've done a few other experiments, but this one is the most complete. I love the brushes in Painter, they really are something. The only thing I'm still trying to get my head around is sharp, clean brushes like you'd find in Photoshop. I'm working out of my comfort-zone which can only be a good thing.

This guy is based on an old GW sketch from an Imperial Guard Codex. He's taken me quite a few hours to paint.

Stay tuned for more paintings throughout the year... :)
