Looking at an article in Black Gobbo (!) (Web Link) They suggest using card for a terrain base.
I got to thinking about this and was worried about the card bending after drying out. Does Copydex (which I use to glue flocking etc) or painting cause surface shrink once dry?

It could- I use thick pictureframing card for my smaller bits of terrain, which is really good as it hardly bends at all, even with a thick coat of PVA...
I'd say it all depends on the size of base you are building/sticking on- anything which needs a base more than 20cm in one direction, or that is heavy will get a thin MDF base- it is tough, doesn't warp at all, is easy to work and cheap.

I wouldn't recomend it for larger surfaces. I once did a lake on a large piece of card and it curled up pretty badly over time. It might depend on what type of card you are using though but as a general rule I never use card for anything bigger than infantry bases (max 4x4 cm)
MDF board may be a bit tougher to prepare and work with but it is thee single best basing material out there IMO.
Cheers!

I've found that MDF does eventually warp and usually right before you need the terrain base.
I've taken to mounting thin steel sheet under my terrain bases for smaller things. An added bonus is that the terrain will then store magnetically as well.
Plasticard is good, but I usally also mount thin steel sheet underneath of it except for really large bases.

On the rare occasion that this happens, (I learned my lesson), I use large coarse flock and/or talus glued under, around and on top. It actually look pretty good !

Card tends to warp due to glue or humidity or paint or a combination of all these. And can get mouldy, which is ok if you're into Plague Marines, but otherwise...
Hardboard worked for some time, but that too can warp - at least in large size bases (generally > 2feet) - for small (well, at least up to 40cm!) sizes it should be ok - and quite cheap! Problem is there's an edge (the thickness) to the boards, which means that e.g. the forest appears to be located on a step! It's for this reason I usually prefer ruins and buildings.
Strong plasticard should be best, but if purchased as plasticard can be expensive. For large sizes it should also be stiffened by gluing thicker sections of a suitable material across is (not underneath, as this would create a raised terrain piece (woods on a platform!), but on the top-side and suitable camouflaged - or included as art of the features on the terrain piece itself!

After some bad experiances I do not use board as the base or as any of the main featues (large parts) of anything I build. I do use it as cheep rubble though. I cut it up into very small parts and sprinkle it on. Does not matter if it warps as it is just more flock at that point.

Hmm... Interesting... I have several bits of terrain based on MDF and none of them has warped in the slightest....
Oh.. Acrylic plastic might also be worth a look if you can get it- it is a little brittle in large sheets, but is pretty tough generally, and quite heavy.

I prefer using MDF as a base material, having suffered from card warpage a time too many. Home Depot here in the US has an MDF-type material on hand pretty cheap -- a 2'x3' piece is only about $1.50.

Agreed, that is a good price. Fortunately, Home Depot is close to my house. Thanks for the info, javelin.
And, welcome to the boards, javelin. Whereabouts in the US are you?

Hi DS,
Javelin is up North of California... in the state of Washington if I recall correctly. He's a great guy. I know him well.
