Hi again all. I just picked up this rules set (and ordered the suppliment which hopefully will become available soon). I just wondered if anyone else plays this, or has additional ship stats and opinions on it?

(I guess that this one is for Tas, if he is out there.)

Thanks.

Hi CS

I have located additional ship stats for many national navies at the Vandering Publications website at this URL. Is this the sort of thing you are looking for?

After working out that you really could click on the index down the side (?), I found them. That is great, and just what I need. Thanks.

CyberShadow, have you received the rulebook by now? Could you elaborate on it?

Sorry, I missed this post to start with. I got Shipwreck and the suppliment a while ago, and managed a brief intro game.

The rules themselves are interesting. It is clear that the author knows his stuff, and the book is very well written and has some great pictures in it. The suppliment, Freeplay 88, is of similar quality, but a few less pictures.

Generally, the rules are very good. Fast enough to play well, but with enough detail (including subs and aircraft). Combat works by weapon system, and the whole thing splits into range bands for most cases. The damage system is a little brutal, but this is acknowledged in the intro, since it is set in an era where missles really rarely miss.

I really have only two issues:

1. The rules as they are written are not particularly clear. The author acknowledges this himself, and has provided errata and clarification on the web site.

2. There are hardly any ship stats actually in the rules. However, again, the web site has a huge number available.

Generally, I am impressed with the rules, enough to download and print the extra web content and put together another game when I can.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask here.

OK, here are the questions:

- How do you handle damage on ships?
- Is it worth for small fleet engagements? (i'm thinking spain vs morocco fleet)
- Which scale are the models, and where do you buy them?
- Is it more fun than WWII naval wargames? i would like to buy a naval wargame but i don't know if it should be WWII or modern day era. I played Battlefleet 1899 and it's really fun, but the fire system (i.e., guessing distances) doesn't convince me, and also the miniatures are extremely expensive)

Sorry. I have been a bit busy, but I did see this.

1. As far as I remember, each missile is given a rating, and each ship has a tonnage. A table then gives the D10 results for damaged, crippled and sunk. Each ship can then take two damaged results, or the other two, with various results (for example, no movement, return fire, etc).

2. We played the sample game of two small vessels per side and it worked well. I got the feeling that much larger fleets could be used when we got used to the rules better, but the detail is there for smaller fleets.

3. There are no models produced for the game, but any military Navy vessels will work fine. It should work well with 2400 or 3000 scale ships, as this is what is is primarily designed for. Navwar produce a huge range at this scale, but anything that works is fine.

4. I cant really comment on this, as I dont play WWII Naval wargames. I would imagine that there is less 'pounding' of enemy vessels. Damage is fairly nasty, and a ship in range which targets you will scare you every time. I get the feeling that it may benefit from larger play areas to get the effect of movement better.

Sorry for the delay. Any further questions I hope will be answered quicker! ?:p

PS: Navwar web site

Uhm, that looks good. If you don't mind, i would to ask you some more questions:

- How are the planes handled?
- And the submarines?
- I have seen that some older ships have armour ratings. Is it useful?(and, if it is, why most modern ships don't have it??)
- How could i buy the basic manual? And which would be the cheapest way??
- Is there any way to take a look at NavWar's models? They have the ships for making a spanish-moroccan force, but i don't know if it would be worth the money at that scale...
- Do they also sell civilian ships?

And this one is for the rest of people out there:
-Does anyone know about any WWII naval wargame???

Hi again. These questions are a bit more advanced, and so my views are expressed on a single trial game and quick read-through of the rules... so these are 'as far as I know'.

1. Aircraft are a little strange. They have an 'effective range'. They are able to spend a certain number turns away from the main ship, moving fairly fast but for a limited time. They can then intercept incoming missiles and spot for the ships.

2. Subs are interesting. All distances ork in range bands. Subs are not placed on the board, and instead move by a range band from the target vessel, closing a band or dropping back by a range band in a turn. I will need to research a bit more about targetting them.

3. I am not sure about the armour values. I will need to look that up (but all my books are in storage right now as I am moving house).

4. I picked up the rule book from an online store in the UK. The core book is only ten pounds over here, which is quite cheap. It is worth getting a copy of the rules for the picture alone. The expansion book (Freeplay 88) is even cheaper.

Some places to buy:

Direct from the writer - probably the best place

Leisure Games (UK)

Spirit Games (UK)

I am not sure if this helps.

4. GHQ also sell vessels which can be used, and their site has pictures.

Navwar pictures on TMP

Navwar do a selection of vessels

The pictures link goes to a topic in the TMP forum. The second post (I think) has further links to pictures of the vessels.
