Ok, it seems what I had heard about the GHQ rules was wrong info. There is a free "lite" version of the rules available and I took a look at it. It's found at http://www.ghqmodels.com/pages/military/freerules.asp

The scale is different from tank charts and the rules seem very different as well. As the rules seem to be 50% off at the moment, at ~$15 I think I'll give them a go.  :;):

I will be curious to hear what you have to say about them once you play with them.  :;):

As will I. A review would be good. I believe that these lite rules are the ones in their tank box packs.

Hi JB,

The new modern rules are supposed to be good.

The last time I played the WWII rules, I wasn't too impressed with them.

Give me FFoT at this time.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

...Thanks ,guys. GHQ is running a special on their WWII game. $15.00 US. so I ordered a set.
First off I don't care for 1 vehicle equals a platoon or such. I think real warfare should be done like it is mano el mano. If you want to command a battalion ( or regiment for our UKers) you need to get some commanders.
As for the tanks chart thing, it is not the same. so I have been informed. If I am wrong you can beat me with 3MB of digits,Ha Ha...
I've yet to play the game, after taking them to my bathr..,er,study and under heavier scrutiny,I ain't a figered 'm out yet.
I usually play my own game "Panzertruppen",but I still check out others. In this manner you have  intellectual knowledge of discerning subjects for these sophiticated forums :p

Hi!

I thought you were talking about their latest ones? I have that book, since they released it. Still not very thrilling.

Yes, I was talking about the latest set. I just checked the online "lite" version and withdrew my claim that these are a new edition of Tank Charts as they obviously aren't.

Since they are 50% off I think I'll buy them just to check 'em out for ideas.

Ok, I received the rules today. So far I've skimmed the book through and found the presentation to be nice with full-color format and plenty of pics.

The rules seem simple enough with only 14 pages. The rest of the book contains unit data and TO&Es for most of the combatants excluding Finland (    ), Netherlands and Norway.

So far I've read the forward and found myself in agreement with the designer so at least that is a good sign. Stay tuned for more.  :)

Well, the first impression isn't bad at all. The rules resemble Blitzkrieg commander somewhat (similar command system) but are different enough.

Every force has a "cohesion" rating which represents morale and training. Everything revolves around the cohesion rating; you have to ake a coheso roll whenever you want to do something.

There's a really neat way to balance the diference in cohesion in one-off games. The player with the higher cohesion value gets less points than the one with lower value.

Each GHQ can give a set number of orders per turn, depending on the cohesion value. In addition, units fcan act in their own initiative but they receive a penalty to the cohesion roll. If a HQ is nearby it's easier to pass the cohesion roll.

When a unit gets fired at it can be suppressed, disorganised or eliminated. It's very hard to recover from disorganisation. Disorganised and suppressed units have harder time doing anything (surprise).  :)

What I like:
Command system
The use of D20
The Cohesion system for one-off games
Extensive To&Es

What I don't like:
Pre-plotted artilery. Understandable considering the time scale but I still do not like it. IMO a regiment commander does not have to worry about fire plans; he has artillery experts in his staff to handle that.

Not yet and it probably will be some time before I can even hope of getting one.  :(

... I ordered cthe game because it was on special 50% off,I believe it still is ,and probably not for long. Anyway,I usually don't play 1 to 5 scale but I got the game anyways. i also ahve just skimmed through it and actaully fell asleep the last three times I tried to read the rules (my fault, not the rules).
I do plan on playing a game sometime soon with them. I feel this is the only fair way of critisizing the rules...

If there's ONE bit of impossible sci-fi I'd like to see in reality it's the teleporter.
