Hi all

been a while since I have had time to wargame and looking to get back into ACW and maybe some napoleonics but very limited on space so I am looking for some advice on a good rule system.

requirements

game level - used to play at brigade level with guns at Gettysburg and general de brigade, similar scale preffered but also looking at options for army level

table size - preferably 4x2 but 4x4 maximum

no miniatures at present so basing is open and this will be for myself and the wife/friends and doesn't need to conform to other players already based miniatures

so far I have looked at
blackpowder - using cm instead of inches, this should equate a 4x2 board representing a 10'x5' using a 10cm frontage for a standard unit in line, also allows naps or acw

shako 2 - again cm instead of inches using two 30mm bases frontage for a standard unit on a 4x2 board

guns at Gettysburg - 5x20mm bases, saboted to form line/coloumn on 4x2

also been looking at altar of freedom for larger army level games and seems good on 4x4

I'm planning to build the board as a permanent setup and only have room for 2 boards at 4x2 so would prefer one for acw and another for Napoleonic if possible but am thinking if 4x4 is really necessary then focus on acw

any ideas/advice welcome

also be interested to here of any rules reccomendations that may fit for different levels of game

I've always enjoyed Regimental Fire & Fury for ACW. Just F&F is supposed to be brigade I believe, I haven't tried it though.

I also have Lasalle for Napoleonics, haven't played it yet though.

if space i limited, have you considered looking at 3mm?
I'm in a similar situation and recently looked at 10mm/6mm/3mm and bought some 3mm samples and read though black powder with an eye to 1 cm = 1 cm napoleonics, looks promising.

I did take a look at 3mm but as I have to paint and make the terrain I think 6mm is the smallest ill be comfortable with, or able to see. had a better look at using blackpowder and using cm meaurements I'm pretty sure a 4x2 table would be a good size.

4x2 = 120cmx60cm which equates to 10x5 in 28mm
bp frontage 240mm or 10" in 25mm would be 10cm which lends itself to using baccus on 20mm bases giving 5 bases.

the main issue would be terrain size as its going to be fixed on the board. I need to decide on brigade level (bp) or army level(altar of freedom or other) as bp scale would want 6mm scaled terrain but army level would be better on 3mm scale

I believe Blucher was designed for 6MM in mind. You might want to look at the requirements for that.

I can;t wait to hear more about your battles.

I played a lot of RF&F. The events are scaled for 15mm. Most tables are played on 8x6 feet. 6mm is 40% of 15mm.

A RF&F table for 6mm would normally sit at 3.5 by 2.5 feet. Just ensure you adjust ranges and movement distance by 40%
