I tried ordering last night but I think Firefox may have trouble with their online shopping.  If the LGS cannot order Black Library, I guess I will try another browser.

It took a few weeks to cross the pond and clear customs, but i've had my copy of Trafalgar for the last week and have read the rules.  Overall I like the game and I suggest anyone interested in playing historical age of sail should pick it up.  It is not as beer and pretzels as Spanish Main nor as complicated as others, the rules reflect an easy to learn set while having enough there to satisfy the history buffs.

Movement initiative goes from the vessels furthest down wind which gives the vessels closest to the wind the tactical movement advantage.  Ships move a set number of cm and is effected by the attitude to the wind.  Turns are handled by turning templates.  There are a couple of special sailing rules for tacking and boxing.  If a special sailing movement or going to full sails, command checks play an important role.  Being in command radius of your admiral helps greatly!

Firing is simultaneous and must be declared.  There are also special firing orders like "Fire as she bears" to allow firing during movement; and "Fire at will" which allows both broadsides to be fired.  Damage to ships is tracked by marking off boxes on a data sheet for Upper (rigging/sails/masts), Lower (hull/gun decks), and Below Waterline (you are gonna sink!).  As your damage accumulates, negative effects are applied of course.

Your arsenal is pretty fair also consisting of light cannon, heavy cannon, carronades, mortars, and rockets.  Other options include special ammunition like chain and grape shot.  Swivel guns and even over-arming your ship with extra cannons.

The rules also try to instruct and incorporate in the gentlemen etiquette of naval warfare during the age of sail.  This of course does not mean everyone abides by them but it is nice that they are mentioned.

The nationality force list is pretty inclusive with all the majors powers of the period plus lots of lesser allies.  Each nationality of course may have special rules and limits on what type and how many vessels can be included in your force.  Yes, there are fire ships too!

The scenarios are grouped into two separate sections; generic game scenarios and historical battles.  The generic ones include point values and historical scenarios have actual vessel listings.  A few notable special characters and unique vessels are included too.

You won't spend a week reading the rule sections, they are short in comparison to the whole rulebook.  A good portion of the rule book consist of nationality forces but the largest section I believe is the historical "fluff" along with an "Eavy Metal style modeling/painting section.

I hope to give the game a trial run next weekend.

Thanks for the information Chaplain L.  I'm looking forward to hearing how they play.
I've been thinking of getting these rules, and using my Spanish main ships as a cheaper alternative to lead.

I just went through the vessels that I already have built and un-built.  I should have enough for close to 2K points for English, French, and Spanish fleets.  Each fleet would have 5 Ship of the Line of various rates, 3 frigates each (5th rate), and 5 unrated vessels each.  With taking upgrades or renowned characters or vessels,I should easily be able to field 2K under each flag.  Unfortunately I did not have enough for an American fleet too.  But that can be fixed!

Ordered!

I will have to play with card counters at first though. No time to start maritime modelling in the immediate future. On the other hand, that should give me plenty of time to choose which nation I want to play. :)

Well if you play at a smaller scale, the fleets are cheaper and faster to paint up.  The rules have conversions for playing all scales too, the base is 1/1200.

Chaplain, which fleets (other than British and French - and Spanish?) are included? US?
And - how many points would a fleet suitable for a smallish battle be? Or (more pragmatically) how many ships (for a balanced fleet)?
Thanks :)

They have tons of nationalities to choose your fleets from; British, France, Soain, US, Netherlands, Russia, Portugese, etc..  I expect they will release more fleets later too.

The standard scenario list has game sizes weighing in at 750 points, 1500 points, and 2000 points.  The SOL's are in the 200 point range before adding any upgrades, and those can push you another 100+ points if you go all out.  One of the Spanish 1st Rates is over 300 points.  So you can play a small 750 point game with just a few SOL or a bit more in Frigates and unrated vessels.  Frigates are about 125 points with no upgrades.

My fleets each comprise so far of 5 mixed rating SOL's, 3 Frigates, and 4 unrated vessels and with just a few options i'm sure I can hit 200 points with each.
