Well if you play at a smaller scale, the fleets are cheaper and faster to paint up.  The rules have conversions for playing all scales too, the base is 1/1200.

Sounds interesting. I noted that Navwar has got a line of scale 1:3000 ships. Anybody know of pictures of these?

LGS got a couple copies in, and I took a look... I'm not sure I agree with how they rated the American 44-gun heavy frigates (Constitution and her sisters), but mechanically it looks like the game I want to play for historical Age of Sail.

Fairly simple, yet more detailed than the Pirates CMG.

But if you look at the American frigates, they can already purchase extra cannon or caronnade, and in addition that also but the upgrade for overgunned.  Plus with their skilled gunnery attribute, these are some heavy hitting frigates.  I would have liked to see the 74-gun/3rd rate SOL the America have been included however (part of "what if" she was not given to France after completion").

Van:  A friend of mine gave me his 'paintbrush' for eyes:  a couple cat's whiskers!

I think the American 44s might have been better represented as fast 4th rate SoLs, instead of overgunned 5th rate frigates, but that's just me... I'll get the rules and play with them a bit, see which version works better.

Is that actually doable?

I am certainly hoping so as I have a ton of them

I hope so, I'm planning to use the POSM ships for my fleets. I have enough to make fleets of several nationalities so making fleets for myself and an opponent won't be a problem.

Some of the white metal ships are nice, but as the GHQ ships can run $13 each, I am more than happy to use the inexpensive POSM ships I already have.

And here's me reading the Hornblower saga to my kids, too... they would love this.

Using those card stock ships is absolutely doable.  I would guess they are close to the standard 1/1200 scale anyway.  I do prefer the metal ships though.  Too bad there are not some ready made wooden ships out there.

Indeed the smaller scales get very difficult to paint!  I'm working on my 1/200 scale Brit fleet now.  They will look better from afar rather than up close i'm sure!

For the larger scales and those who like to run the rigging, I was given a tip from someone who runs a professional shop.  Instead of using thread for the rigging, use metal wire!  Easier to attach and sturdier too.  You cannot tell the difference either once painted.
