Howdy folks,

I was thinking about starting some 3mm Sci FI as I really like the scale. Now I am researching for a ruleset I like. Not as easy as I thought.

What I want from the rules system:

- not too complicated and not too long(i would prefare under 2 hours)
- nice layout (optional)
- i dont need fast movers but gunships would be ace.
- mechs are nice but dont need BT style complexity
- eletronic warfare of some kind
- PDF release

Some games I have diffents levels of info about.

Laserstorm - Currently my favourite but no air support makes me sad. (gunships!)
Strike Legion - I have zero knowledge about this ruleset.
Future War Commander - Is not digitally available :(
Horizon Wars - looks nice. good, clean, proffesional layout but I am not sure if the rules are my thing.

Any Recommendations?

Hi,

Depends what you are looking for, all of these rules will give you an adequate game. My comments as follows:-

Laserstorm:- I have these rules and yes like them with good game mechanics. However, no rules for air units, very limited rules for indirect support and although novel use of card activation to overcome overwatch this is a handicap for using large number of formations. Balanced points system, but lacks online support and army lists.

Strike Legion:- I have an old set of these and have played several games. In its simplest form these rules work well. The designer has now released a combined compendium which now updates Strike Legion comprehensively. Covering all manner of sci-fi combat with good online support from the designer and available army lists.

However, if you are looking at 3mm gaming so you can mega game at operational level then I think Strike Legion will not be for you. Alternatively check out Legionaire Games Planetary Operations.

Future War Commander:- These rules are based on GW Wamaste thus each unit base has a combat value so th unit can represent a section all the way up to a platoon/company. Thus couple theoretically be used for mega gaming in 3mm. While the Warmaster system transferred reasonably well for WW2 combat, particularly for infantry bias games it become more and more clunky and unbalanced for modern/sci-fi games. Never less it has a strong following with many army lists available.

Horizon Wars:- recently released by Osprey yes this is a very professional set of rules well supported online by its designer. Similar to FTC each unit has a combat value so each base can be scaled up and down. The rules are generic with a few specialist rules to give some depth.

Adrian

I have a review of Horizon Wars and a Battle Report on the blog on my sig. You might want to take a look at it.

I am not a fan oc Future War Commander's activation method for the technology level it is trying to portray.

I’d suggest LaserStorm. It’s probably the cleanest of those mentioned thus allowing more minis on the table. Not really concerned with aircraft, as that can easily overpower a game. Even today, few battalions have their own dedicated air support.
