I was on another board this morning and saw that the Royal Mail is implementing a restriction on the amount of water-based paint you can mail in a single package - four containers up to 150ml each. Packages will be x-rayed to ensure compliance, and violating packages will be destroyed. In other words, you would be able to receive a maximum of four measly GW paint pots in a single package - kind of crazy, no?

Now, I don't live in the UK, so this probably won't affect me at all, but this is obviously insane, and typical of regulators and lawmakers not thinking things through before they pass legislation.

You can read all about it here: https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/ ... sed-paints and sign a petition.

Is that what it is? They privatized and now they can make a few extra bucks by forcing people to split orders?

The Royal Mail was sold off about a month ago, so let's all blame free market economics.

Weird. After a quick google search it looks like -despite privatization- Ofcom still calls the shots when it comes to the vast number of regulations handed down. It's the same thing here in the States. The USPS is no longer a government department per se, yet the government controls absolutely everything about it.

Privatizing really is more about allowing contracting and subcontracting for freight and letter transportation. Safety and security in the transportation realm however is dictated strongly by the government here in the U.S. and more so in the U.K.

Technically ofcom isn't government controlled, it's a QUANGO so it's government financed but independent of goverment control.

I think my riff was a bit too deadpan, but I was joking too, this will have been in planning from before the sell-off.

Here, all privatizing the mail monopoly has done is make all prices skyrocket, service level drop thru the floor and buggerall to be done about it.
Sending a light package within the country, maximum 400km, costs about five times what the same package would have cost to bloody Fly in from england ..

Pre-privatising here there was a huge price increase, in order to make the company worth more before the sell-off.

Private monopolies are just a terrible idea.
