Mini Sculpture's second annual competition starts today! You've all got two months to crack open the putty and clay and have a bash at it. The rules, prizes and discussion topic can be found here.

This year's theme is musicians. They're not unfamiliar to us wargamers, particularly in the unit command groups of Warhammer Fantasy Battles and similar games. That already gives a lot of scope in terms of time, nationalities and races. From Roman cornicines to American Civil War buglers, from haughty elfin trumpeters to scrofulous goatmen beating on ragged hide-drums, and well beyond. There's also plenty of room for behind-the-lines character pieces, all kinds of entertainers, minstrels, heralds, regimental band members, tin-whistling pixies, orcy rokkas and so on. Loads of possibilities - have a go!

'any medium' - would this include CAD work? or the entire spirit of the competition to encourage new greens?

Something I already wondered about, but I still have to edit the rules to clarify.

At the moment I don't mind CAD, but for the competition I would prefer to have a physical print to judge alongside putty and clay entries, to see how any dazzling detail holds up at 28mm. But from what little I know the waiting times for 3D print companies can be fairly long. Am I right? Would there be enough time to whip up a CAD sculpt and wait for the physical results to get back to you?

The other problem is the cost of getting something printed. Although your sculpt would be yours to make money off as you please, at the time of the comp it would still eat into any winnings. Is this something CAD sculptors would be prepared to shoulder?

Or in both cases, do you think there would be few problems in showing off renders?
If you want to make a compelling argument for that, make it quick so I can sort things out one way or another! I may have to repost it to Mini Sculpture too, to try and convince some there. (Thanks to past and present shenanigans at Wargames Factory and Defiance Games etc., there's quite a bit of resentment of 'vaporware' in some corners of the wargaming web.)

just the medium of creation. I'm not entering either way - don't have time. but it does intrest me.

Shapeways FUD has really sped up recently, we are talking 2-3 weeks from the initial order so it's plausible to get a print submitted.

Thanks for the input, and for making me think. I may put out feelers on the subject - see if a specifically CAD competition later in the year, with a CAD category in 2013, would be a good idea.
