aahh the unpainted figure syndrome
myself and my friend Simon have an unwritten rule, only painted miniatures allowed on the table (and a slightly more strick unwritten admendment) only well-painted miniatures allowed on the table - therefore the single colour Space Marine Rhino is not allowed
the nearest I have come to breaking the unwritten rules was with a Warhammer 40K battle
If you check out the full report
Warhammer 40K Battle Report
You will see some "nearly" painted Orks

Ha! With my speed at painting, I would never get a game in. We have an unwritten rule that we should not use an unpainted piece if we can avoid it, even if it means changing the force. If we have loads of troops, that is what we take before we look at unpainted vehicles. This system works quite well, as it means that we have fairly balance troops painted, but dont go short of a game.
I think that I am still painting up some plastic Marines from 40K (Mk VI), and I have an Eldar Wraithship from Space Fleet and four beetlebacks unconstructed, almost ready for their undercoat!

Hi!
I also ascribe to the "play with painted" miniatures philosophy. I even go as far to let people use my stuff if theirs isn't painted yet.
The funny thing is, while I like playing mini-games, I really dislike painting. I know its wierd, but I find it tedious, boring and really tiresome. While I like the resuts of my handi-work, it takes months or years to get into the painting mood.
Matters have been made worse since I found reliable painters for hire. If their was one game related thing I could wish for, it would be to really enjoy painting.
That and the ability to NOT buy more miniatures than I need, but thats another thread.

well, as i solo game at the moment, its a case of play an be damned if their painted Most are painted to what i call table top standard, some are well painted and a few still shiny silver.
ive played wargames since the early 60s when my gran took me to a wargames do in birmingham, where the gods of wargaming where playing, featherstone, wise and grant. bought my airfix and hinchcliffe figures and a bellona cityscape board and was hooked, never painted a figure for about 10 years but boy did i enjoy the games i had.
i think as long as its not a tournament then why bother if your figures are painted at that moment, ive seen kids reduced to tears at GW stores because someone has said they cant play because its unpainted or not painted properly.
i play then paint, having a coat of paint on my figures doesnt stop me from rolling abysmal dice nor my imperial guard running at the smell of a khorne jugger

I understand the desire to have painted figures on the table. However, the way to encourage someone to paint an army is not to ban them from playing until it is done. Rather, if you have someone with an unpainted army, you offer to set aside an hour from your game time each week to help paint their army. Makes it go faster and they are greatful for the help.
Ban someone from playing and you may loose them from the hobby. Help them and you will gain a friend for life.

So, Jimbo, is this game going to get a report for your site?
Were there any other pics of the game?
If there is one thing I really really need, its a digital camera. Of coarse I need a decent computer too.

alas there will be no game report
I was too busy interpreting the rules to take notes and pics and the vast majority of the pics I took were blurred... ah well maybe next time
a quick overview for this forum perhaps
We too identical forces - didn't bother to look at the Army Lists, basically based it on what came out of the gaming box at the time (and they were all painted).
6 Land Raiders 6 Rhinos each carrying 10 Tactical Marines 3 Vindicators 6 Dreadnoughts
Basically I thrashed Simon, he was left with just a few Vindicators... the new assault rules are very deadly (and I quite like them). I thought the firing process would be longdrawn and complicated, it wasn't. I do like the iniative phase and alternate actions, makes you think on your feet more.
Do I like it more than or less than Epic40K, well I haven't decided...
