In a recent game against the dreaded Necrons (boo hiss !), a question came up about the use of Monoliths. Specifically, whether broken Monolith formations can still act as a portal ? Because of the small size of the formation (four), they do become broken quite regularly in our games and this question has come up more than once.

We decided that they could still act as a portal. Nasty ability, however, as even a broken Monolith is hard to get rid of due to its fearless ability.

Any thoughts ?

Ayup, broken portals are still portals, so it can actually be highly advantageous for the Necron player to have the monoliths break and get a free move out of it.

The newer in-progress Necron list adds some blast marker penalties for moving through a broken portal.

in fact it's a key strategy (or really was until people got wise to the gamey tricl) to get them to break and gain the extra moves.

check my post history: i suggested the portal BM things about 5+ years ago to plug this annoying hole. still nothing on this yet. (Eldar should have this too but that's another can of worms)

Still active. No BM for coming through a broken portal.

Spend the first two turns and the first half of the third trying to destroy the infantry formations outright, then try to break a few key monolith formations in a position to contest/control. I find that's a much more viable strategy then wasting your shots on 4+ RA and Fearless units. If you break them you're only giving the Necron player a 30cm bigger threat range out of the portal, and a 2/3 chance of redeploying them next turn.

Yep the original list broken portals absolutely usable. The new Sautekh list broken portals add BMs for teleporting formations. You said formation sizes of 4, you can only get 4 monoliths in one formation in the sautekh list not the original.

I'd still love to see the +1BM for using a broken portal become universal, for all necron and Eldar lists
