Apologies, as always I'm over thinking the rules to sliver an advantage...

So war engines in assaults.
The rules set they can use FF or CC for there wounds value, but CC must be into units in CC and FF into units not in CC.
So let's say a warhound assaulted a tactical marine and rhino. Can the warhound put the marine in CC, but then choose to FF putting all three shots into the rhino?
- there are clearly opportunities to use this to get past strong armoured units in a combined formation.

What then for squads of WE, e.g knights. Say four knights ran into four marine Devs. The Devs have a better FF than CC. Can the knights put one Dev a peace in CC, but then FF (at the Dev not in CC with that particular WE)? ,- in such case the paladins first striking FF, then choosing to use 2 cc (for their damage capacity) if still in CC or FF if not, then filing using the macro CC if anything is still alive in base.

(I have a large project for work I'm refusing to start)

Yes this is all possible. But bear in mind line of sight in the "shoot each others' based units" example. Also your hits cannot spill over to other units which is a disadvantage for WEs, and you have to say what you are attacking with your basic CC and FF attacks together, you cant wait to see what survives, yet your opponent technically can allocate them in any order which might lead to there being nothing left to allocate a FF hit in certain cases.

Personally I find it's rare for there to be opportunities to use this placement to make a big difference because usually the opponent has options too, eg in your rhino example I would just countercharge your Warhound with the rhino forcing you to CC and bypassing your shields, as the rhino is 6+/6+ anyway. I know it's just an example but I find in practice similar decisions are involved so the advantages are not large. It's a bit like the common choose one has to make whether to countercharge using a FF specialist, sacrificing your own FF but possibly causing the enemy a greater sacrifice.

Mind you I don't play knights; that does seem a nice combo.

In these situations you have to keep separate pools (one FF fits, one CC hits) for each WE. You opponent allocates them and there's no order in which they have to do this but usually it's easier to start with the CC and then go to the FF.
