Sure this has come up before but there's no FAQ. How do people allocate the blast marker when combined formations come under fire. These being examples:

1. Landing craft with predators ground attacks and lands. The predators disembark; falcons overwatch. At this point the marines are one formation. Falcons choose whether to target landing craft (the war engine), the predators, or both.

2. Aspects and guardians do a combined engagement vs some scouts, who overwatch. At this point the eldar are one formation.

The BM is supposed to be placed immediately, but which formation do you place it on? Does it depend if one or more of the formations was allocated hits? Or suffered kills? Or perhaps just the nearest? Or nearest in line of fire? If multiple formations were hit, do you place more than one BM for coming under fire? Or do you always place a BM on every formation that was part of the combined action, i.e. several BMs for coming under fire?

To complicate things further, in our game (which was similar to situation 1) only the landing craft was in line of sight. Landing doesn't trigger overwatch, but when the predators disembarked the formation as a whole could be overwatched, which allowed the landing craft to be targeted.

Or, do both formations take 1 BM?

(and on landing craft example we did backtrack on it after in the game, but still a good question)

Both formations taking one would be hard to arrive at after re-reading the rules.

The simplest thing to do is allocate it to the closest target formation.

So for 1, that would be LC or Predators (if the Falcons only shot at one of them) or whichever was closest if they shot at both.

For 2, the assault can result in both formations being equal distance away with units in base contact. In that instance, I'd say it's the attacker's choice where it goes. Since it is placed before any overwatch hits are rolled there's less gaming that can be done with regards to breaking formations before the assault begins.

This was discussed many years ago, and Neal Hunt stated that the single BM would be placed on the unit nearest the firing formation (effectively on the formation nearest the firing formation). This is true even if the firing formation is able to select units from one of the formations that make up the assaulting force (eg the THawk or LC).

If this is not in the FAQ, it is certainly a good candidate.
