I was thinking about this recently and wondered what, if any issues there would be if I were to use the Epic: Armageddon rules in a WW2 setting.

It would be simple enough to stat up the units, probably using IG lists as a base, however I am wondering if I have overlooked something that cause issues in play?

any ideas, suggestions as to what if anything may need altering?

I think it could work and it's something that has come to my mind in the past. A couple of things to consider:

Army Lists
- These would have to reflect WW2 OOBs and so would require to be restructured completely.
- You would have to consider what level of command you are playing at. My instinct is that if you are representing each tank 1 for 1 and each stand of infantry represents a squad then you would be putting approximately a battalions worth of troops.

Game Mechanics
- I think that CC would have to be removed completely, but FF would still apply.
- No armour saves for any of the infantry as power armour wouldn't really exist.
- WE, Skimmers, Walkers, Spaceships, teleporting or any other high tech abilities wouldn't exist.
- Fighter and bombers could work exactly as they are I think, except with no rockets.
- I think Planetfall mechanics could easily represent paratroopers dropping into battle, but the pre-bombardment would gone.
- Artillery and indirect fire would require a spotter, either aerial spotter planes or controllers on the ground, in Epic we kind of assume that there are satellites or some other high tech method for knowing where the enemy is.
- I don't think the standard tournament scenario would work well for WW2 and so other scenarios would have to be used.

That's a start, but I'm sure there are several other things that would need tweeking.

Not sure you would need to remove rockets? They were in play with aircraft towards the end of WW2, and could be tweaked to represent dive bombing?

Also, CC would still take place surely? Perhaps it would need tweaked to be less prevalent and more dangerous. Force people more into FF.

Guided rockets fired from aircraft didn't exist until after the war, your analogy of dive bombing would work, you would just have to reduce the range to 15cm or 30cm to indicate that the plane has to get close to it's target to drop the bomb precisely.

Other than in the movies, hand to hand was very rare (you could make the case for Japanese in the Pacific), the irony is that if you make it more deadly you are likely to make it more prevalent.

Agree about the hand to hand, must be some way to tweak it to make it possible but not probable?

Just the cc would be something terrible like 7+ so FF would be natural.

Teleport doesn't just represent teleportation but an entire set of sneakiness and other techniques (such as parachuting). I'd think it'd be a very limited ability if it was actually present.

Edit: Self planetfall imho is better for parachutes

Infantry only - I think tanks would still be fair game. Up to the player to properly support his armour.

Suggestion : (Assuming you take casualties in EA to include morale losses and surrenders as well as literal casualties) you might want to make the CC hit roll reflect the training of the unit being attacked rather than the attacker (similar to Bolt action.) ie. Paras storming a position occupied by conscript or green troops should hit better than when trying to take a bunker held by Elite SS.

It would work absolutley excellent I think. 40K units and rules in all scales has always reflected WW2 equipment and tactics more than modern or sci fi.

I have considered this too and it has been done before by at least two different groups. Sadly I have not been able to secure versions of their rules/stats despite much googling.

My suggestions would be to leave the rules unchanged for now and just stat out/ fins points values. I think CC is fine as it is, infantry would probably have 6+ in CC anyways so there wont be that much of it. (except for assault engineers and the like) And it can easily represent SMG:s and grenades to since FF is really small arms fire a la rifles.

Could be fun with some flavourful national special rules too.

Actually I rember there was a Epic WW2 Rule Variant when I was younger... :{[] but.....I can not find it anymore....its lost in the net....

Anyway, take a look at the armylist from Blitzkriegcommander and I think that s maybe a point to start from. The activation system is more like warmaster in blitzkrieg but the fighting values do look a lot like Epic.
