I'm sorting a store-away-able 8 by 4 gaming table for my room, after getting advice here and elsewhere thusfar and considering various options I think I'm going for 4 of these tables pushed up together with two 4 foot by 4 foot squares of wood on top with some holes drilled and metal pins put in to keep the two pieces together when gaming. Hopefully that'll be pretty sturdy. The whole set-up can be stored away under my bed when not in use.

Should I go for MDF or Birch Plywood? I know nothing about wood and so have been doing a load of looking round on the net, but different people and sites seem to recommend one or the other as being best in their own different ways and I'm stuck which to go for and the project is languishing.

Where's the best place to order wood online from in the UK? (probably easiest as I don't drive, though I could maybe ask a friend). Can I get wood cut dead on the right 4 by 4 size to within at most a few mm? If possible I'd really prefer it dead exactly on for gaming, plus I don't really have tools to cut up wood and I understand MDF dust is hazardous. B&Qs apparently don't deliver and their sizes are some mm out anyway as they're using metric sizes rather than imperial. What thickness should I buy too? I won't be bracing it with wood around the edge or bottom like some people do, this'll just be the flat piece of wood, so I may have to go for a little thicker than some people use.

Lastly anyone know where I can get a large non-stick mat or mats to put between the tables and the board? I've heard it suggested as a good thing to reduce the board's getting nudged about and since I'm planning to sand both sides of the board in different colours having a softer surface for it to rest on would protect that.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

4'x 4' bits of wood of any thickness will be a pain to move around.

Personally I use loft boards on top of my dinning room table to give me a 6' x '4 gaming table. They are designed to interlock so don't flip up during play.

2 of these gives you a 6' x 4' table and they are much easier to move into place by yourself.

I just put one of the new GW mats over the top and its good to go (other gaming mats are available  ???).

I got myself a set of 2x4 boards, which are easy to store and transport (I managed to drive them home from the shop in my little car). 3 lined up and held in place with some bulldog clips make a standard 6x4 board, of course.

I've got 3 4x2 mdf boards with a cheap pine support screwed and glued to the back. Sturdy enough to lay over a bed or table. Battle mat glued to the playing surface but it does tend to shed some flock and needs patching every now and then.
