I've been working on some epic forest...

I wanted to have a very flat base but also thin edges so I've gone with 1-2mm plasticard bases.

The cut plastic:

Adding some texture with DAS type air-hardening clay:

Base coat:

Note the cracking on the final picture. Air drying clay tends to shrink when it drys and will warp the base if you don't put some weights on the edges, unfortunately, this makes the surface crack. The cracks will be covered up when it gets flocked.

Interesting. I am also using 2mm for some city bases Im doing, but I would like to know why you didnt try PVA/White glue and sand? Maybe it would have been easier than putty?

Looking forward to your paint scheme :)

I build the bases up quite a bit so they didn't look flat, some of the bases have little ridges and hills.

I make elevations using 1/8 and 1/4" MDF and filler. Eager to see yours finished!

Finally got around to working on these.

A test piece...

I'm using the removable canopy method. Turned out quite well and easy to make.
I think I need to add more 'stuff' around the base, bushes and what-not.

Used caulk on the base of this one, much better than the DAS modelling clay. Less shrinkage, cheaper, quicker drying...

I agree; a little bit of undergrowth would help it look better.

All quiet in this sector...

...or is it!?

Think I'm going to try 2 terrain types 'forest' like these, and 'woods' with individual trees. Probably different rules for each.

Also note these trees are a little on the small side for 6mm, that's because I prefer my terrain to be even smaller scale (and treat the vehicles and troops as tokens - which is why i also prefer square bases :P ).

I really like the removable canopy forest, makes a great realistic effect.

How did you make the canopy?

Very neat. I'd also love to know how you did it.

Tutorial here...
http://www.architectsofwar.com/howtoinformation.aspx

I used PVA instead of a hot glue gun, which made things a bit more difficult.
Also, I used smaller nails as I'm aiming for ~3mm scale.
