Have you kids seen the new 40k galaxy map from the upcoming 8th edition of 40k? (image too large to display on the forum directly hence the link)

It looks like chaos is ascendant and spreading after the destruction of the planet Cadia (and all the ancient pylon structures on it that previously held the eye and chaos effects in check for millions of years). We haven't heard about it yet in the background but there looks to be a new giant warpstorm at the heart of the galaxy - much bigger than the Eye - with tendrils either side, which effectively split the Imperium in two halves. After reading the recent trilogy of army book supplements I feel quality of the new background is ok but not great, but I'll be interested to see where the story develops with the returning Primarchs, the new Eldar god of death, ect.

If what i think is happening is right - ie. The imperium is going to begin to split into a assembly of petty (and not so petty - Ultramar) fiefdoms in the battle against chaos - then they should have don't this years ago imho.

The imperium/chaos struggle has always been the most interesting and importantly, most "unique 40k" part of the lore since realms of chaos. Not only that, it will reflect what actually happens on the table most of the time - marine on marine action.

Only issue is now that it doubles up on the HH game, but i guess the success of 30k is why they are following this path at last.

Wow the new stories are terrible.

The Cicatrix (galaxy-spanning warp storm) had potential, but Baal is the northern half that's supposed to be cut off from the rest of the Imperium yet Guilliman flew there to save the day against the Tyranids. Not only did he cross the warp storm, he also managed to pretend the Tyranids' shadow in the warp wasn't there. Baal Prime was saved and Guilliman can now rebuild the Blood Angels and successors with Primaris Marines. Ka'Bhanda and his Khornate minions came out of the warp storm to clear the Tyranids on one of Baal's moons, leaving behind a specially-arranged pile of skulls.

Now the Primaris Marines are getting a grav tank. Basically an M2 Bradley on Land Speeder-like plates. There were Custodes players who wanted grav-Rhinos like in some of the old artwork (in Visions of Heresy). This is great for them.
