The FW books state that all the original 20 legions did have grey armour when they set out at the beginning of the great crusade.

By the time of the heresy with the exception of the majority of Word Bearers who still used grey as the main legion colour every other remaining legion had changed dramatically in appearance from those early days.

The SOH in the SM1 rule book are recommended to be painted black with grey highlights no sea green mentioned.

I am not privy to forge world books and did not realise they all ventured out with the same armour colour, thanks for sharing :) the SOH and world eaters were black in SM1 rulebook also ? I decided to scrap this and modernise and paint in newer 30k paint schemes myself but with 1st edition models .

Good old codex grey i'm sure.

Yes indeed there have been several colour changes since those days.

The newer colour schemes are part of the attraction to the period for me. Old school models are not a problem for me either in fact i will be useing some old models with this newer collection to boost numbers, plastics vehicles mostly i should think.

I have so many 6mm beakies I am using these as the main basis of my armies but will adding more newer sculpts as well so as not to waste models (and spend too much cash ). I'm using all the old landraiders and rhinos rather than sourcing newer ones , even though the newer ones from EA before it discontinued are nice, it would cost a fortune :) and I love those very oop LR and R tanks!

MK6 beeky armour historically is only in use by the raven guard legion in field trials although the alpha legion have acquired this MK by the time of the Isstvan V massacre. MK's III and IV being the main armour types used at this time.

So you could use the newer plastic marines too no problem.

Oh hey Alf mate we seem to have hijacked your thread here, sorry buddy.

Maybe we should start a 30k thread that everyone can use.

The only GW books I read are the 30k novels, and you are correct of course, Ive been listening to deliverance lost again recently and Raven guard have the honour of 'corvus mark' first .
like i said Beakies for the bulk of armies (I have so many) and other mark for any additional units I add later :)after Isstvan and Calth I assume mark 6 will start showing its beakie head for most armies once supply lines catch up and seeing as horus has Mars.

You are right MK6 does go into general traitor use quite early in the heresy period with Mars turned traitor and being the main armour production facility.

No problem dakka - that's kind of what I was after to be honest!! So they have rejigged the background a little since '88, which isn't really too surprising!!

I was kind of hoping I could knock out some black marines that I could use both as 30k SoH and 40k Black Legion, well of course I *could* but you know what I mean!!

Marines don't really do it for me as a list - can't quite get past the "Space Nazi" vibe, which is kind of silly I know but hey!! If they're fighting against each other in a 30k setting though I do quite like the levelling nature of using the same forces against each other - just like in the good old days!
