Now I must admit I don't like the stompas much - too damn lumpy.

But I've recently got to thinking, how do they walk?

Stompa's are meant to representations of Gork and Mork (or is that just Gargants?)

I've always thought Gork and Mork are basically shaped like huge Orks.
Likewise, Stompas are walkers
.

Being Orky they shouldn't have 4 or more legs surely?

Stompa's being the short fat shape that they are don't work as a biped.
Either their legs are so close together they'd look like a spinning top or too far apart to be able to move the centre of gravity of the War Engine above the foot without leaning over a huge amount. As demonstrated.

Really big tracks, giant screws or "tri-Tracks" (see attached pic) all would work, give the terrain climbing ability of a walker in return for a sacrifice of speed (again, like a walker). They're cop out solutions though, not real walkers.

After thinking for a while I thought of having two 'feet' either side of a ground touching arse. It could bump along like a child's toy but not really a true walker.
Like this one when the middle two legs are in sync: linky

I may have to go for a new Stompa shape that more closely matches that of Orks.

too far?

I figure that Stompas use an Orky antigrav field to keep the Stompa off the ground, and the legs are only bearing 20-30% of the real weight.

In that way, they can move a lot faster than anything that big has any right to do.

I reckon that Imperial Titans would need to use much the same technology.

I always assumed they just wound them up at the back and then like a cheap clockwork toy let it go. Of course the crew could all just get out, pick it up and move it a bit further while the enemy isn't looking. Perhaps even roller-skates...

well that explains the name stompa...

You've convinced me they could feasibly move. I still think it looks a bit undignified but I can't see a mek minding that.

So that's relativity large feet, four large internal pistons where the legs would be and a massive torque turntable for each ankle.

That's do able.

Thanks.

That makes sense ...  Stompa's on legs ... it's just another stupid idea from stupid guyz at stupid G/W who are always having stupids ideas, every stupid time they try not to make something stupid ... they make something stupid and then it's just stupid ! :_(   Are you guys getting all this !?

I always pictured a huge pendulum inside, shifting weight precariously across over one side, the Stompa leaning and almost falling over, lifting the opposite foot up, which could then be moved forwards.

yep...final liberation solves it for me; though the in game animation for all the walkers was hilarious; their feet moved so fast!

That's exactly how I imagined they would work, too.

the internal pendulum would work like a tail, except in would be hidden under the armored mu-mu (and perhaps in the front instead of the rear).

While walking Stompas & Gargants are pretty improbable machines, some of the best examples in model form incorporate legs that go high into the armored skirt and a movable "waist".  This would at least give the Stompa a somewhat realistic way to balance itself out and create momentum necessary for walking forward.

Bringing any "real-world" physics Stompa locomotion would require an extreme amount of bulking up of the legs due to the mass of the upper structures.  The whole machine would probably more closely resemble a kangroo that spends it's days doing squats & leg-presses at the gym.  Aside from that, I can't imagine how the machine would deal with close combat & gun recoil without falling over or stumbling around.
