After his ork airfleet was beaten by the Dark Eldar last game, my Orky opponent volunteered again for a 3000pt match against me and the Dark ones in order to try out some new tactics and play on the lessons learned.
Once again I was going head to head with an Ork air armada, only this time we would be playing on a 4x4 board with only a small amount of terrain.
Forces were:
Orks: 12 Fighta bommas (divided into 1 group of 9 and 1 of 3) 2x Gunwagon mobz of 13 wagonz each 1 speed freak mob of 20 warbikes and buggies 2 Landas filled with ork mobz
Dark Eldar: Ravens Razorwings Shadowbringer + 8 warriors Kashnarak and portal Reavers with Dracon Tormentor titan Ravagers with Vessel of pain 2 Vessels of Pain 1 Warrior syndicate 6 strong with raiders.
Deployment: The Orks deployment was very quick, with only 3 formations to place, they stayed close together at the centre. The Dark Eldar deployed cautiously, keeping to the left flank and centre and trying to keep as much terrain as possible between them and the Orks.
Turn 1: Initiative went to the Dark Eldar who immediately placed the Ravens on CAP, worried about the potential Armada of Ork aircraft on the horizon. The Orks responded without a care, the speed freaks racing forward towards the building that housed the Dark Eldar Wraithgate.
The Vessels of pain at once took the chance to attack such a dense formation and doubled, pounding the buggies with lances, but whilst causing a surprising number of hits (especially with the barrages) the orks armour held firm and the formation refused to break, taking only 4 casualties. The Vessels withdrew behind cover of a large building between them and the objective, whilst the first gunwagon mob charged down to support the buggies.
The Dark Eldar ignored them, moving instead to claim one of the Ork objectives on the left flank with the Raider Syndicate who quickly occupied the building it was inside.
The second gunwagon mob was less kind, sweeping down to send some passing shots at the Tormentor, but failing to score any hits. The titan moved up towards them, blasting at the buggies beyond and further softening up the formation whilst the Ravagers picked on the gunwagons, killing 2.
The Ork airforce began to move in, but surprisingly both formations attempted to go onto CAP as well! Only the smaller formation managed it, the larger earning only a blast marker for its effort. Thanking the gods for their luck, the Slavebringer swept in to attack the heavily bombarded speed freaks. The fighta's ignored the airship, waiting for the razorwings and allowing the shadowbringer to land unmolested. They needn't have bothered it seemed, as the air assualt was absolutely brutal. The Orks took only 3 casualties, making several armour saves whilst - with the gunwagons in support - annihilating the Syndicate!
The blow was heavy, but not mortal, and when the Orks refused to activate the landas this turn, the Dracon swept forward to attack the damaged gunwagons, dragging the Tormentor into the attack as support. Between them they lost only a single stand of Reavers, but killed 4 of the ork vehicles and then further winning the assault by 3! Decimating the gunwagon mob saw them flee back to the Ork rear lines. The Razorwings failed to activate and the turn ended, but both ork formations failed to rally, leaving the speed freaks with a huge number of blast markers.
As turn 2 began, the wraithgate shimmered into life...
Turn 2: The Kashnarak swept forward into the speed freaks with a horrifying roar, killing 5 of them before being gunned down by the bikes and the second gunwagon mobs' support fire. It was enough however and the speed freaks broke and ran, joining the broken guntrukks at the rear line and leaving only the single Ork formation on the battlefield. The Dark Eldar won the initiative and immediately replaced the Ravens onto CAP for fear of the Ork armada and the waiting landas.
The Orks responded harshly by sweeping around behind the cover where the Vessels of pain were hiding, only to obliterate one in a hail of fire and strip the other of its shadowfields. The broken vessel fled forward, only to be gunned down by a swarm of Fightas who managed to also shoot down one of the Ravens as they swept in to defend.
The Dracon signalled the advance and led the reavers and the Titan to attack the gunwagons. The resulting combat was horrifically one sided, and again the Dark eldar lost only a single stand, but this time killing 5 Ork machines and winning combat by 8! The mob was wiped out and the victorious Dark Eldar swept back towards the wraithgate.
Undetered the Orks moved into the attack with the first landa. It smashed straight into combat with the Dracon and the Tormentor, swamping them in Orks. The fight was bloody, but the Dracon and her remaining reavers were killed and the Titan - whilst undamaged - forced to break and flee.
Before they could even feel smug at their victory, the Orks were suddenly attacked by the Ravagers. The resulting storm of firepower was horrific, destroying the Landa with a critical hit from a lance and cutting down over half the mob! The survivors fled with only 2 stands remaining to join the rest of the broken horde.
The remaining Ork landa then made its approach, this time attacking the Dark Eldar syndicate holding the objective in the ruinous left flank. The attack was a hideously botched attempt and whilst the first mob had inflicted a horrendous number of hits (which were fortunately largely saved) this second mob hit only twice and only once managed to get through the Dark eldar's cover. The Dark eldar responded coldly, cutting down 4 of the orks and winning the combat, leaving only a handful of 5 stands to flee back to the ork rear.
As turn 2 closed, the Orks had already seen the back of their army broken, their airforce still fighting for control of the sky. One turn remained yet and a glimmer of hope restored as the speed freaks rallied.
Unfortunately so had the Tormentor.
Turn 3: The Dark Eldar won initiative this time and immediately attacked the Speed freaks with the Razorwings. The bombers did a fantastic job, cutting down several of the buggies and once again breaking the formation before they had even had a chance to move! The Ravagers followed this success by advancing against the larger fleeing ork mob, wiping it out with their disintegrators.
Determined to pull back the game the Ork fighta swarm began the attack, swooping down on the Razorwings in one last effort to wipe them from the sky. Only a single bomber was downed, and the Dark Eldar swiftly responded by shooting down 2 fightas with the Raven. With only a few consolidating moves left to use, the Dark eldar moved quickly to claim objectives.
As night fell, it was clear Commorragh would enjoy ork slaves for many weeks to come.
3-0 win to the Dark Eldar! And my opponent has decided that he hates how slippery the Dark Eldar are to get to grips with
Unfortunately, I completely forgot to bring my camera with me to club this week which means no photos! Sorry guys!
