EpicA Kroot list?

Is there one? I don't think I've seen one and can't seem to find one, so I'm guessing there's not. Given certain developments and the new 40k codex it could be nice if there was. Anyone fancy putting one together? (I'll throw some ideas in but am not volunteering).

An army of mostly CC focussed infiltrating scouts would be a very different army for the game. Kroot have an (old) 40k list which could be good to read for ideas.
There are flying kroot, cavalry, monstrous kroot beasts (some with bolt throwers on top).

One problem is what would Kroot AA look like?

Given their interstellar cannibalistic mercenary nature (it is literally their evolutionary niche) perhaps Kroot could take 1/3 allies from a Tau or Imperial Guard list but with a 'no allied War Engines' limitation.

Krootforms exist for every part of the ecosystem, so kroot-pterodactyls or other giant flyers could exist. It's very 'Avatar'. :)

Taking some design cues from the Eldar exodites and Feral orks would be a good start, I think.

This list is suddenly very attainable and thus interesting to me. I'd play the crap out of it. For AA I like the idea of crazy quad guns on hunchbacked beasts.

I like the image of the army being a gathering of tribes or families of kroot – some with more oxen, some with lots of hounds, others that can all fly...

Hmm. Maybe I'll have a pop at writing up a list as a starter for discussion, unless anyone else is particularly keen?

I see something Titanic when I think of the Battlefleet Gothic Kroot Warsphere.

Maybe they have a Titanic rolling Warsphere that rolls on the battlefield and lay waste to everything?

edit: maybe there is something Gungam as well as the rolling spheres of the republic army to use from Star Wars..

btw ... how about the Kroot having some primitive hunter drones.

Also I think - due the fluff I read on the BFG Kroot, that they created the warsphere to be used for migratory purposes, maybe it would be in order to have some migratory special rule - say an upgrade you buy to the whole army that gives them purpose (less likely to break) or a swarm like rule akin to Nids..

I already thought about the Kroot Warsphere, but thought I'd see if there was any interest in the list first.

The Warsphere is primitive spacecraft that buries itself into the planet become a town and base for them. Comparing it to other BFG ships it'd be in the region of 4km in diameter, so probably too big to be represented a a unit or scenery.

I think it would be nice as an option in the list though. My thoughts are that the army could have a Warsphere special rule (probably the only special rule the army would have) whereby there's a Warsphere burried off table, which would have both positive and negative effects for the kroot player:

Positive - bombardment. The Warsphere's all-round guns would likely be powerful but inaccurate as they're primarily for space combat. At the start of each turn the Kroot player would plot an ordinance, like with spacecraft and it would use the large template but it wouldn't come down till after all formations had activated that turn and it would alway scatter. This should be the Kroot's only indirect barrage in their list.

Negative - the Kroot need to protect their Warphere as it is vitally important to them and it could be damaged by enemy troops and it's a large area to protect. The entire Kroot table edge (or table corner) counts as the Kroot player's blitz objective and if both players haver unit within 15 then the enemy counts as holding the objective rather than neither side.

Could be intereting? May be a bit over complicated though.

Okay, so here's a first bite at things (see attached file).

I've decided to start by converting over the existing Kroot Mercenaries material (from the Index Xenos article and the current Apocalypse formation).

The stats are based on the Tau list, with the various kroot adaptions being created with the addition of the following special rules:

Stalkers – Teleport, First Strike. This follows the convention for Mandrakes and Stealth Teams, which share elements of their approach.

Vulturekin – Jump packs

Hunters – Sniper

For the new stuff:
Shaman – character upgrade. Rather than giving him literal psychic powers, I took a cue from the Tau Ethereal, but made him a bit meaner in combat. He has a kroothawk with him, a sacred animal that makes him fearless and inspiring.

Headhunters didn't really translate very well, so I changed tack with them and made them a combat-only unit. They represent the bravest warriors of the Kindreds. Not sure if 3+ is a bit too good for them (particularly with disrupt), but we can alter this.

There are various Great Knarloc types – the Great Knarloc, Goaded Knarloc and Baggage Knarloc.
The Great Knarloc is the wild one: point it at the enemy and go.
The Goaded Knarloc has its beak muzzled, and is accompanied or ridden by Kroot with staves to goad it into battle. It has a heavier gun on the back.
The Baggage Knarloc is muzzled and has no gun, but is drugged and carries supplies vital to the Kroot caravans. This grants it fearless and leader (representing its morale value to the nomadic kroot).

The Great Knar-roc is a terrible pun and also a flying vehicle.

Riding Knarlocs are also represented. I used Boarboyz as the basis with a few modifications to make them less tough (they're not orks, after all).

The army list is currently as follows:

Kroot War Party – identical in size and price to the Tau equivalent. Upgrades are basically everything except Baggage Knarlocs and Shaman.
Kroot Tribe – larger: Shaper, 15 kroot warriors and 5 Baggage Knarlocs. Upgrades are basically everything except Headhunters (exclusive to the War Party)
Knarloc Caravan – five knarloc riders and options for the various Great Knarlocs, plus specialists (Hunters etc).
Vulturekin Aerie – Ten vulturekin, access to the Great Knar-roc

Not much idea on pricing at the mo.

Thoughts on this skeleton?

The abstract is for a tribal, Kroot-only list; so no Tau or allies at the mo. I'd like to work out pure Kroot stuff before we work it up into how a Mercenary army would operate.

Cool idea! Having a whole army with Scout is probably a bit to good to be balanced though. Scout is one of the best abilities in the game and should probably be reserved for 2-3 units.
