Really cannot see anybody taking the Twin Plasma Rifle variants. Is there anything that could be done to improve that variant? Just saw Fudd's message getting in there first, . . .
Fair enough. Any ideas on what to do with them? I don't have a 40K Tau codex so can't see what optional weapon system HHs can take. I wasn't planning to separately cost HHs but if we have to then we have to. I guess in this list it's more feasible given the focus on armour.
Looking at a variety of other Plasma Weapons (Infantry and Vehicle) I think is would be fine to give the Plasma Rifles an AT shot as well.
Infantry Plasma Guns typically get: Plasma Guns, 15 cm, AP5+/AT5+
Vehicle (and Devastator) Plasma Cannons seem to be: 2 x Plasma Cannons, 30 cm, AP4+/AT4+, slow firing
Leman Russ Executioner has: Plasma Destroyer, 60 cm, MW4+ (don't go there?)
The Warhammer 40K Wiki has:
Quote:
Twin-linked Plasma Cannon - Tau Plasma Cannons are more powerful and up-scaled versions of Battlesuit-mounted Plasma Rifles. They are primarily used to take down light tanks and heavy infantry, a role they often fulfil with exceptional ease.
So taking down tanks is reasonable. Compared to the Railguns (AT/Lance) and Fusion Cannon (MW4+) then any "ordinary" AT shot is aimed at taking down light tanks. I personally think that the Crisis Suit Plasma Rifle should have AT6+ anyway. With the vehicle power systems you might even go for a slightly longer range, 45 cm, say?
Plasma Cannons, 45 cm, AP3+/AT4+, might be a reasonable position.
This would make it roughly the same odds to hit as the missile pod version (Missile Pod Tank clearly better AP sustain fire with markerlights, Plasma Tank better AT shooting if doubling with markerlights, say). The Ion Cannon tank still has the longer reach, sacrificing one on each to hit number (60 cm, AP4+/AT5+)
Again from the Warhammer 40K Wiki the option to arm with Missile Pods is to improve hits against hordes of infantry:
Quote:
Dual Missile Pod - Hammerhead-mounted Missile Pods fire barrages of the same missiles used in Tau Battlesuit-mounted Missile Pods. They serve a similar role to Ion Cannons, but sacrifice effectiveness against armoured infantry for a chance to impact on larger groups of infantry.
As an aside, I do quite like how the less capable Hammerheads will probably only be taken as the cheaper upgrade vehicles. Puts them in the manner of support tanks for a regular formation.
Also like the commander upgrade at 75 points. And the Scorpionfish upgrade at 175 points.
Makes a 2 Scorpionfish + Commander formation at 475 points fit just under other logical BTS formations at 500 points.
