Hi Guys,

I wanted to repost some quotes from Jervis:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been trying to avoid reading threads about lists I'm not working on yet, but with a subject line like this I just had to take a peek...

- The main reason for the 'generic' Tyranid models in the army list is that we are going to replace ALL of those OLD models with new sculpts.

A *lot* of work has been done of the Tyranids in 40K since those old Epic models were released, and now both I and the 40K design team are keen to update the Epic range so that it properly compliments what has been done for 40K. We've already started on this project, and some interesting early conceptual work has already been done.

- In time, once we've fully worked up what are at present rough concepts, the generic vehicles and WE in the Tyranid list will be REPLACED by datasheets BASED on the NEW concepts.

*However*, because we're doing NEW SCULPTS, at least initially there won't be a huge number of different types of unit. That's why the initial Tyranid army list works with a fairly small palette of units, and is based on a Tyranid army in the early stages of its 'evolution' (i.e. One that has only just started to atack the Imperium).

Best regards,
Jervis Johnson, Head Fanatic.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

QUESTIONS FOR JERVIS:

Hi Jervis,

Grimshawl has two questions to you regarding the philsophy and background of the new Nid list:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION GS#1: Jervis says he wants to bring the Nids up to date with what they are like in 40k today, however he then says that this list is to represent a Nid fleet that has just encountered the Imperium?
QUESTION GS#1: Is the new Tyranid list to represent the first Tyranids that the Imperium has encountered or later fleets after the Tyranids have had chance to mutate and adapt to the Imperium's military forces?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION GS#2: Are not these two mutually eclusive as the first release of the Tyranids was presumably how they were when they first encountered the Imperium and the newest Nids in 40k are a product of them changing because of their contact and ongoing conflict with the Imperium?
QUESTION GS#2: Did the original Tyranid release army lists represent the Nids upon first contact with the Imperium and thus the more recent 40k lists represent Nid army lists after a first encounter and later experience with the Imperium?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
Please see the reply to this question below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jervis Answers: The list represents the first contact between a hive fleet and the Imperium. Note that each hive fleet is a seperate entity, so whatever happens to one has no effect on the others (they evolve seperately).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jervis Answers: See previous answer; the 40K codex is designed to repesent a specific hive fleet at a specific time with additional options to allow a player to tailor their own fleet at any period in its evolution.

Jervis Johnson,

QUESTIONS FOR JERVIS:

Hi Jervis,

Warphead has three questions for you regarding the miniature make-up and appearance of the new Nid list:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION WH#1: What will the final miniatures for the bigger Nids look like?
- It makes no sense to playtest a Dominatrix with bio-plasmic breath if the final model has two venom cannon like weapons. Jervis must have had something totally different in mind when he made the rules for the Hierophant and the FW one is an indication what the Epic sized will look like.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION WH#2: Any chance we can take a look at what the Vituperator, Dominatrix, and so on will look like?
(Will the Dominatrix change at all?)
- If that is not possible, can Jervis update the Tyranid list to at least accomodate the changes that the new models will force upon it (if the concepts for the miniatures are finished already).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WH#3: Is the Tyranid list final as to the number of tanks?
- A lot of people would like to see more variability in tanks!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

------

QUESTIONS FOR JERVIS:

Hi Jervis,

Grimshawl has a new question for you regarding the colour background of the new Nid list:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question GS#3:If this Tyranid fleet has no previous experience with the Imperium then... WHY does it have Tyrant Guard?
- As I was given to understand their 40k fluff is that their genetic makeup comes from Space Marine geneseed material?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

------

QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY JERVIS:

---

QUESTION WH#1: What will the final miniatures for the bigger Nids look like?

Answer: At the present time, the truth is I really don't know! As more information becomes available I'll let you guys know about it, but for the moment, base the stats on what feels right to you in terms of what works in the game.

---

QUESTION WH#2: Any chance we can take a look at what the Vituperator, Dominatrix, and so on will look like? (Will the Dominatrix change at all?)

Answer: See my answer above. However, at present I have no plans to change the Dominatrix model.

---

QUESTION WH#3: Is the Tyranid list final as to the number of tanks?

Answer: No, but please, let's not get carried away :)

---

QUESTION GS#3:If this Tyranid fleet has no previous experience with the Imperium then... WHY does it have Tyrant Guard? - As I was given to understand their 40k fluff is that their genetic makeup comes from Space Marine geneseed material?

Answer: Good point! They probably shouldn't have Tyrant Guard (Or we say that they ran into Marines even earlier on?)

Best regards,
Jervis Johnson,
Head Fanatic.

Jervis has released another statement that will affect the Nid list:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: In the past Forgeworld minis were not to be used as they were only in the "Collector" section. In the last few days there seems to be a feeling amoung some that FW is now OK to pull from. If we include a FW mini will that require you to produce one rather then allow a FW mini on to the list?

A: You can now use FW miniatures in the list. (The old restriction was there just in case the full Epic range was put in stores. FW miniatures can't be sold in our stores, so including them in lists would have made the range incomplete. We've now decided that Epic will remain a 'direct sales' range with only a limited range ever carried in stores, so this restriction does not apply any longer.)

Q: In our suggestions on the lists we have had quite a few suggested Free Upgrades, units, and formations. Please share with us your thoughts on the "free" stuff. Do you want free upgrades/units/formations?

A: I'm cool with free stuff, but a lot of players are not. Expect strong opposition from players using other armies to aanything free you include in the list. Good luck!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, Forgeworld items are now OK and not simply Collector's models.

He has also mentioned that some units may also now be OK as converted miniatures and that not every piece will require a produced miniature for it.

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

QUESTION ANSWERED BY JERVIS:

Hi Jervis,

Sotec has a new question for you regarding an offer to use his Ravener sculpt/conversion for the new Nid list:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question SOT#1:Jervis, would you like to use my Revener sculpt/conversion for the new Nid list?
- I have quite successfully built over 20 stands of raveners. I would be more than happy to fire off some to Jervis if he wants them and they could cast them into metal.

Jervis has new statement about the "official status" of FW models in the Champion area:

http://forums.specialist-games.com/epic....ID=4742

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jimmy Grill: Okay, now does that mean that SG will *not* produce any Epic Tau as FW already has the army released?

Jervis: Unfortunately, I can't answer this yet either, as we're still nailing down what Studio resources would be available for new SGR miniatures, or if all the models could come out via FW. It's probably going to be aa week or two before I can give you guys a firm decision on this.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure what this means, but I hope that it means that FW will now be fully "official."

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

------

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** MaksimSmelchak: Are Forgeworld items are now OK for "official E-A play and not simply Collector's models? ***
------

That is what he has answered. Yes, we can include them in the lists.

*** MaksimSmelchak: Is it OK that we have converted miniatures for new army units in playtest army lists and that not every piece will require a produced miniature for it? ***
------

Jervis has said we could do so in our list as long as they can be made from existing minis and we add a clear explination of how to make them.

More updates from Jervis about model legality.

Question SOT#1:Jervis, would you like to use my Revener sculpt/conversion for the new Nid list?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately I won't be able to. One of the reasons for slowing down on new models is because of the amount of work it generates in our factory and along the distribution chain, rather than the cost of getting the masters made in the first place. Sorry!

Best regards,
Jervis Johnson,
Head Fanatic.

------

I'm cross-posting this reply here, as well as in the thread about new Nid units:

I thought I should send a follow up to the my ealier mail that is posted above.

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, the re-structuring of Fanatic means that I am not going to be able to do an 'all-new' Tyranid army as I had first planned. Instead we will be re-releasing the exisiting (E-40K) range. Although this is not quite as exciting as making new models, it does make it easier to come up with and start testing the Tyranid list, and should allow us to make the army available again sooner than we had previously planned.

The main exception to this are the Synapse Nodes, which I think it is important that we include, even if we have to tell players how to scratch-build them themselves. We can consider including other new units, but if we do this we need to make sure that they really are _needed_, rather than just being included to add a bit of variety or because they seemed like a cool idea.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Best regards,
Jervis Johnson,
Head Fanatic.

Hi Guys,

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jervis: Maksim got in touch with me recently about the Tyranid list. I'm going to let him explain how things will work in future, but please rest assured that he is aware of the issues raised here, and plans are in hand to make sure that things get rolling again for the Tyranid list ASAP.
Apart from anything else, it looks like we'll be able to get the Tyranid army back into production again rather sooner than we'd previously thought, and we'll need an army list to go along with the models when we make them available again!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, Jervis asked me to explain how things will work in the future and here goes:

NEW DEADLINES:
- A new deadline has been set by Specialist Games for the Tyranid list:
- September 2005: Deadline for submission of Tyranid, Black Legion CSM and Lost & Damned army lists by champions to Lead Developer.
- End 2005: Deadline for handover of approved Tyranid, Black Legion CSM and Lost & Damned army lists to Web Editor.

REDEFINED CHAMPION ROLE:
- The nature of list Champions has changed. Where Champions were once primarily moderators of playtest boards that collected information to make Jervis's job easier, now Champions are asked to act more as army list directors and authors (Collecting playtest data, suggestions, etc. and making decisions using that information.).

PLAYTEST FORUM GUIDELINES:
- The Tyranid playtest team will continue to discuss playtesting progress on the official playtest forum and make changes every 2 to 4 weeks.
- Playtesters will be polite and constructively critical of each other (No bad-mouthing!).
- All playtesters will be aware that the moderator/champion may edit posts to break them into more easily read paragraphs or for other reasons determined by the Champion.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Jervis,

Markco has made some good comments regarding our motivations and design philosophy regarding the E-A Tyranid army list:

quote:

Checking over this Nid list (5.2o), it strikes me that it is still using all the terms and design philosophy that came from the assumption that a new range of Nid miniatures were going to be released. However, this is no longer the case.
We need to look this issue square in the eye and ask if what we are doing here is the right thing?
I am surpised that others have not commented more upon this.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And Markco has come up with a question:

Perhaps Jervis can comment on this?

Hi Jervis,

Chroma has made some about the background of the E-A Tyranid army list:

I haven't done an exhaustive search for a galactic map with Hammon's World on it to confirm which fleet we're focusing on, so has it been decided by the Powers that Be?
All it says is that the list represents first contact by "a hive fleet", not which one and when.
Is it possible to forward the question to Jervis?
Where on the galactic maps is "Hammon's World"?

Markconz makes a very good point. About a week ago I sent our factory a list of the models I'd like put back into production for the Tyranid range. In addition I sent the Studio miniature design team a 'wish list' of models I would like made for the range. Here they are:

EPIC TYRANID RANGE

Epic Tyranid Swarm
Hive Tyrant
Carnifex
Zoanthrope
Biovore
Exocrine (used for the Expectorator)
Haruspex
Harridan
Hierophant (IMPORTANT: Old Hierodule model is now used for the Hierophant. Old Hierophant & Hydraphant models are not used.)
Dominatrix

TYRANID WISH LIST

Synapse Node
Hierodule ? new model, either based on FW model or a new concept.
Hierophant ? replacement for the old Hierophant & Hydraphant models
Dominatrix ? replacement for old model, that can be made into a ?neutered? version without the rider on the back.

I think it's unlikely I will get all of the stuff on the wish list, but I should get some. if the Hierophant and/or Dominatrix get made then they will replace the old models.

With regard the current Tyranid list, I'd change the names on the list to match the names used above. Units that are in the army list but not included in the range, like the Hydraphant and Vituperator, should *stay* in the army list; I may be able to get FW to make more models for Epic, and having a few units that are needed to fill in gaps in the range would be a good thing rather than a problem.

If we're talking about Hamman's world then I think we are talking about Hive Fleet Kraken. That's the background line from the Hierophant entries in the IA 2004 Update book.

------

Hi Guys,

Jervis wrote me this today (Tuesday, 29 March 2005) in response to several queries I made:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jervis: I've just posted a reply to the questions pinned on the forum. I'm going to assume you've read that in my replies to your questions below:

-----

1. Maksim: Also, the greater number of fans would like to see the names of Nid units change back to their original names (such as the names of the Bio-titans).
Would this be OK with you?

Jervis: You'll need to use the same names I've used in the list posted on the forum.
You can incorporate other names into the background text by saying that the units are "also commonly referred to as...".

-----

2. Maksim: A second issue is to create more Nid vehicle types to match the E-40k line (such as creating a Malefactor again).
Would this be OK?

Jervis: It's probably best not to do this. The things I've included in the list are the only ones that are approved by the 40K design team as being 'okay to mention as being part of the official background.'
You can include rules for the old models in the 'Classic Models' section though.

-----

3. Maksim: A third issue is to create more than one type of Gaunt to match the E-40k sprue (Termagunts, Hormagaunts, etc.).
Would this be OK?

Jervis: This would not be a problem.

-----

Jervis.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Jervis,

ColDark has a question about some language choices in the colour background that I beleive Andy chambers originally wrote:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ColDark: I'm sure this has been mentioned by somebody else before, but I can't find it so I thought I'd mention it again. I'm just querying the use of the word "invests" in the Army List T1.00 section. Specifically...

Phase II Approach: The Hive fleet arrives and invests the planet.

As English is my language, I must confess that I thought this was a simple spelling mistake, and the erroneous word was supposed to be "infests", or less likely perhaps, "investigates". But, on looking up the dictionary definition of invests (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=invests), I see that invests actually means beseiges. I'm quite sure, however, that the vast majority of English speakers would be unaware of that meaning, so I think I would be tempted to change the sentence as follows...

Phase II Approach: The Hive fleet arrives and beseiges the planet.

Big post for such a small point
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.specialist-games.com/epic/fo ... IC_ID=6037

So, essentially his question is:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question CD#1: May we change:

Phase II Approach: The Hive fleet arrives and invests the planet.

to...

Phase II Approach: The Hive fleet arrives and beseiges the planet?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
