Battle report here:

http://sdahl.net/~sdahl/whepic/20130914/

Effectively a training game against an old-time Squat commander who had played all of one previous game with the NetEA rules. I think my Bio-Titans only survived the game because he didn't sustain with the Cyclops, but advanced or doubled forward, which was probably a mistake. On the other hand, the Squat war engines were very hard to crack, so they really needed to be on my table half.

Post-game thoughts:

- Dactylis as part of a regular swarm works great at the low price!
- Exocrines work fine in a regular swarm too.
- Lictors, supported by Harridans, cut a swathe of destruction this game. They work really well, if unopposed. I still think it is odd that they need to roll for "teleport" disruption; They ought to get a re-roll, at the very least.
- The Hierophant spent turns 2 and 3 broken :( It was rather disappointing to see a big bad monster like that cowering in the ruins. It is surprisingly easy to break, has a hard time coming back from broken, and needs to engage to do anything effective. I'm not sure it is good value for points as it is.

Thanks for these reports StM!

The poor Hierophant got shot up pretty bad by the Cyclops and Leviathan. Did you play those large grey patches as any type of cover or LoS block?

If you can get into CC with them the Squat WEs aren't too scary anymore. I had four Terminators play hacky sack with a Cyclops two weeks back. It's just getting there that's the hard part.

What were your thoughts on Swarming and the Hive Mind rules?

They were cover (rubble, for a 4+ save for INF), which helped the Bio-Titans a lot against AT shooting and barrages. Against a Cyclops Fury cannon, not so much. We play with true LOS where War Engines is concerned, so there wasn't really anything on the table to completely hide behind.

Indeed.

Swarming is nice and simple, and motivates the addition of Warriors to swarms.
The initiative rules works fine too, except perhaps for the poor Bio-Titans who are too easy to keep broken.

Can't war engines use either their CC or FF in an engagement? That makes Squat war engines rather less wimpy if Carl quoted that rule proper.

They can, but CC attacks will only go on units in base to base with them, and FF against units within 15cm. You get the extra attacks either way, but only if there are valid units to hit. If nothing's in base to base with it then it doesn't get assault weapon extra attacks and can't use its CC. Likewise, if nothing's within 15cm it can't use its FF and doesn't get small arms extra attacks.

How did your opponent feel about the Squat list? How did you feel about it? Anything strike you as over or under-performing, fiddly, etc.?

I think we both thought it worked fine; It had a certain squat style, for sure.

The Thurgrimm v4.0 Stubborn rule was hard to remember - I hadn't played against it before, and my opponent (being a recent returnee) had plenty of other new concepts to keep in mind. Also, the Supreme Commander being the Living Ancestor and not the Warlord was a surprise to me. Otherwise, nothing that was hard to remember or unusual.

The Berzerkers didn't live up to their reputation, but that may be simply because they got jumped as soon as they left their mole. I'd perhaps boost them to CC 3+.

They Cyclops is great at the price, cheaper and better than a Reaver. Slightly slower, but significantly better armed. I'd take two, every time :) It should be costed at at least 525 points, to avoid doubles at 3K.
