Two heavy weapons on one Carnifex was possible under the 3rd and 4th tyranid codexes, but not the current 5th edition.

There's a 6th edition tyranid codex due out later in the year though, so it will be worth seeing what that brings to the table. According to plausible rumours there's meant to be a model for the Harpy at last, with an alternate dual build of the kit that is an AA flying beastie that attacks fighters in CC.

When was it made illegal? There's been a few Tyranid codexes the last years?

From the previous edition (where Carnifexes could be customized a lot) to the current edition (where there are only a few boring and overpriced configurations left).

I can sympathize; I have one in 28mm scale :P

I was just browsing the 40k Tyranid Codex while putting together some Carnifexes and I realise there's an error in Leviathan.

You have a 'Boomfex' Carnifex armed with a Large Venom Cannon (should be called Heavy Venom Cannon to be pedantic) and a Stranglethorn Cannon but this isn't a legal combination for a Carnifex. A Carnifex can only have a single one of either of these two heavier weapons, not both at the same time. One of either and twin-linked Deathspitters or Devourers would be legal if you want to stick with it being a dedicated shooty Carnifex.

If you exchanged the Stranglethorn Cannon for twin-linked Deathspitters, the change would be only cosmetic and no stats-change. Then those of us who have some fexes with two heavy weapons could keep them that way. Dedicated shooty fex should stay in my opinion.

Actually you're wrong - the stats are different, there would be a change. Twin Deathspitters are 15cm AP3+ Disrupt, the Stranglethorn is 30cm AP4+ Disrupt.

For me this looks like way too nitpicky. The 4th ed codex (I'm guessing this was current when Zombo started the list) allowed it, and the current codex allows a Carnifex with multiple ranged weapons, and who knows what the next codex will do.

What version of the codex was this list trying to match? Zombo original post just said latest style. Not sure we need to worry about what GW is doing now. If we need a 6E ruleset version we can make a new list

It's not intended as a direct translation of the latest book per se, more to reflect the modern model set and concept of the army.

Obviously it is mostly based on the 5e codex though.

For the record I'm not bothered about whether the combo is legal in 40k; I like it and think it's fitting, and has a role on the epic battlefield.

I'm going to be pushing this as soon as onachus is out of the way - which looks like it could be pretty soon. I reckon there are at least another couple of people who'll be up for it too. You're still into the list Zombo right?

Cool, I was curious as while I'm glad we're going to have an official Nid list I like a lot of the newer models and units that came out of 40k. It'll also resonate better locally as I get people into Epic who play Nids to see units and model types they are familiar with.

I will start painting a nid army this spring. I like both onachus and this list and would likely try them both. With resent development in 40k do you have any plans to include Exocrines and Haruspexes? I think that would be kind of cool and bring the lists closer. It gives more incentive to play them both.

And how about swarming will you keep the older D3 version or update to fixed swarming values like in onachus? I've played against both versions and I have to say I think the latter is a lot better. It goes much faster.

My intentions for this have changed. I am no longer developing under the NetEA banner, and am developing this list separately for my epic: hive supplement. As such, future versions will not be based on the onachus rules.

I'm fine with that - I just want to be able to field tervigons! Post a list when you've got something.

I've got a half finished version at home, I'll see if I can do something with it tonight.

If you want a starting point for the new 40k units:

The stats for the Exocrine and Haruspex are really at the border of AV to WE.
Trygon, Tervigon and Tyranofex are Toughness 6 and have 6 Wounds.
Exocrine and Haruspex have also Toughness 6 but only 5 wounds.
A Hive Tyrant and Carnifex have Tougness 6 but 4 Wounds.

Stats could be something like this:

Tyranid Exocrine
Type Speed Armour CloseCombat Firefight
Armoured Vehicle 20cm 4+ 4+ 3+
Weapon Range Firepower Notes
Bio Plasmic Cannon 15cm 2 x AP3+/AT5+ -

Notes: Fearless, Reinforced Armour.

Tyranid Haruspex
Type Speed Armour CloseCombat Firefight
Armoured Vehicle 20cm 4+ 4+ 5+
Weapon Range Firepower Notes
Grasping Tongue (15cm) Small Arms -
Crushing Claws (base contact) Assault Weapons Extras Attacks (+2), Macro-weapon

Notes: Fearless, Reinforced Armour.

Now to the Nive Crone. Seems to be the Tyranid's only dedicated AA weapon. So i added Vector Strike. Leave it out if you think the Tentaclic Missiles are enough.

Tyranid Hive Crone
Type Speed Armour CloseCombat Firefight
Armoured Vehicle 35cm 5+ 4+ 4+
Weapon Range Firepower Notes
Drool Cannon 15cm AP3+ Ignore Cover
Tentaclic Missiles 30cm AP5+/AT6+/AA5+ One Shot
Vector Strike 15cm AA4+ -

Notes: Reinforced Armour, Skimmer
