IIRC it is officially mentioned in the BFG FAQ 2010. What I do know for sure is that many BFG players are picky regarding that once since it's all about base size (model scales are totally inconsistent anyways).

Never did bother with anything other than the cardboard markers (yeah, booooo, hisssss).

Not seen a game of BFG being played for many years, what do/did people do with torpedoes when you reduce the number?

I put a d6 on the cardboard counter to show its strength, but maintained the salvo's effective width.

But I haven't played in years, either. Really need to find a way to get hobby and life to work together again...

BFG FAQ 2010, page 8: "Attack craft are represented by 20mm square markers. When used in a wave, they must be spread and moved so they are always in contact with each other, and they cannot be stacked."

That combined with those who might want to field their infantry in the more old school way, the notion of 20mm square bases might not be that crazy to do in the longer run. :)
