Been working on some smaller mercantile ships that will most likely be released on a single sprue. Each craft is about 20mm long.

Curious to hear your feedback before shipping this one off for production.

Gorgeus ships! They look amazing but I've always thought that mercantile ships are bigger than navy vessels.

Nice stuff!
How about some large troop transports as well for all the big walkers and tanks?
Cheers

Larger mercantile ships are being planned as well, can't show you those yet.

As for these, I guess that BFG players could use the small ships as proxies of System Ships.

Oo, some interesting designs in there, @malika2! They could also be Rogue Trader escorts, or perhaps a couple to a base could represent a bigger transport. Anyways, it is nice to see a range of merchant marine sizes!

They might be a bit too small for normal Rogue Trader escorts. There are two mercantile security escort ships which are done. A modular transport craft is also in the works, which provides the possibility of armed freighters and fire ships of course. :)

They're presumably Rogue Trader escorts that've read Asimov's Foundation series :P

But the peek at what's to come is pretty exciting!

Asimov? How so? (Im actually really curious since I haven't read the Foundation series)

Browsed through NASA's database and found a relatively high-res asteroid, so I thought: lets try to make a Novan mining station. I imagine that most mining would be done on asteroids, basically strap a whole bunch of engines on them and then suck it dry.

I'm running into a couple of issues though:
1) NASA doesn't have many different high-res asteroids files, most are pretty low resolution and just look like blobs.
2) These will be pricy to produce since they are basically massive chunks of material that need to be printed, as solid models they'd also be rather heavy, unless you go for resin.
3) One of the fun things with asteroid stations and such is the modelling itself.

A sollution is to make a modelling kit. There are many ways you can make easy asteroids as seen here and there. But a small baggy of 'station bits' could really add a bit of character. So various thrusters, turrets, buildings/towers, landing bays, docking stations, etc.

Your thoughts?

At first I thought that you've designed the Rock model. :)
IMHO a modelling kit is a way to go. From financial point of view (for manufacturer AND the customer) it would be best solution. Although full resin (hollowed out + cut in half?) models would be much nicer, realistic etc.

Maybe so, but do keep in mind that most asteroid designs for these types of games (BFG, X-Wing, etc) aren't that realistic, they just have to look the part. Another thing to consider is that they're secondary bits, they are terrain (kinda). So they shouldn't be too pricy since terrain generally isn't that high on the priority list when compared to armies/fleets.

"Station bits" would probably also be of use/interest for projects outside of BFG. Sounds good!

looks good. like the idea of bits to add to own "roks", maybe do some guns aswell?

the bits could also be used for other stuff. 6mm factories and so on, if the looked good
