Look at some of the Hasslefree models. 28mm, but I rather love 'em.

I don't much care about 'space vikings', but some of the trim and detail patterns, nice solid geometry and no curvy elegance is still of crucial importance. All that swooping lines nonsense is for nancy. Oh, and include beards or straight up no, hell no, no way, never.

Don't like this though. Can't comprehend how a style can be 'retarded'. Even if you really dislike it.

Oh nice. Not really wanting to switch scales but it's good to see something not viking / biker dwarves in space for once. I had held out hope on Mantic Forge fathers as the infantry seemed interesting but they rreally nose dived the vehicles designs.

Ha i am partial to beards too provided they're mammals. Short aliens get a pass. See I'm not worried about blocky designs as opposed to chunky designs (there's a difference). The can have curves if you like, but they got to feel substantial and big heavy things. Pseudo-Scandinavian runes and geometric shapes are a huge non-starter for me.

I'm meaning it in the classic literal sense of the word (probably lost in my required mental translations-not in the incorrectly used colloquial insult). It's intellectually devoid of growth and stunted and without development. Everything dwarven has to be pseudo vikings and runic because some antisemitic author wrote them that way 75 years ago? Let's move on a break the mental shackles and come up with something not aping tolkein for once.

Runes, I'm with you on that, that's just overdone and not necessary, but adding solid shapes, angles and such, that lends solidity to designs in my mind and they're awfully easy to paint freehand! It feels practical (even if arches are fabulously strong architectural shapes) and gives them a feel of their own, even if overdoing the style end up drifting into a rather aged and aping-things-that-came-before style.

When you put them up against the other various forces of our collective hobby though, it helps to distinguish them from a lot of the more 'swoopy' or rounded objects and models.

From the initial designs we've seen, it looks like the angular solidity is there. Keep the beards in and I think we'll have a winner. :)

So I've been struggling for a neat look for these guys, and I think I finally got something I like.

They won't be dwarves in space - I'd like a unique alien species, while maintaining some stereotypical dwarf like qualities.

Image

They have stony, thick skin, and thick quills instead of hair on their forearms, legs, and head. They have bony ridges along their brow shadowing bright, gem-like eyes, and a thick lower lip set in a massive strong jaw.

Most wear very little armor aside form a typical Grudd mining rig, which features a mining light, built in communications, and a "misting" system which renders an alien hydrocarbon gas into a wispy mist which the Grudd breathe. Typically, arms are left bare, and feet are covered in rugged industrial work boots.

Grudd will often adorn their quills with small trinkets to show off their wealth.

Image

The older a Grudd gets, the larger they grow in size, and the longer and more prominent their quills become. The oldest Grudd are almost as tall as a full grown human male - but they are never taller than they are wide.

Thoughts?

Great concept. Not to sure myself about going away from the dwarfs in space, maybe i am stuck in nostalgia mode but beards are a must imo. Love the bit about the mist breathing, very good ;)

I think you will not see the difference between a dwarf and a grudd in 6mm. :)

I love the concept!

Add some funky bionics here and there to give them a more techy feel. :)

OK - I can throw in random bionics. They will be "industrial" in appearance.

First Grudd Infantry units coming up:

Grudd Warriors - Armed with slag cannons (weapons that shoot super heated chunks of metal that burst into molten slag on impact)
Grudd Dredgers - Armed with heavy mining equipment for close assaults (hammers, drills, saws, etc)
Grudd Demolishers - Armed with heavy support weapons (Bomb Launchers, Mining Lasers, Micro-beam cannons, etc.)

They look suitably "golem" like I think.
