Ok, so today saw the first playtest new Overwatch rule. It's a case of so far so good.

Both of us fell foul of Overwatch, both lost important units to enemies using it against us. It worked very well. What is interesting is that the addition of the Overwatch may mean that we change around when we activate certain units.

Fo example, we usually leave activating Titans until last. This may not be the case going forward as units waiting too late may find they are in trouble when they enter play, being subjected to Overwatch attacks. An optional rule that mixes up tactical decision making is what Evolution is all about so I'm fairly happy.

One thing just to clarify - it's implied in the rule above but not explicitly stated - units on Overwatch may not fire at an enemy if it activates on First Fire, only if it moves on advance and charge thought the Overwatching unit's LOS?

Hi!

Your last clarification is an important one, since overwatch should ONLY occur if movement within the overwatch formations LOS happens.

Once you have tested this some more I am proposing it for Platinum.

Yes, you're right. Better to be explicit than imply anything. Here's the updated version of the patch - note that I've added a section for units on Overwatch acting as spotters.

Overwatch: if you have activated a unit on First Fire orders but have not fired that unit, place 2 First Fire counters next to that unit to denote that the unit is now in Overwatch mode. The first counter is used to denote First Fire as usual, incurring the usual bonus and penalties. The second counter represents you being on Overwatch, allowing you to Snap Fire later in the turn.

When an enemy unit enters the LOS of a unit on Overwatch, you may interrupt that player's action to perform on Overwatch. Note that enemy units that do not move but make First Fire attacks do NOT allow you to perform on Overwatch attack. The likes of Praetorians and HQ units which have the ability to move and then First Fire will only trigger an Overwatch attack if they make any kind of move at all. In the case of HQ units, you may only perform an Overwatch attack subject to the usual restrictions, i.e. You could only attack an HQ unit if it is the closest of its type.

The attack is subject to the usual rules for firing. You do not gain a +1 on your rolls to hit even though you are on FF orders. This is to represent the fact that you are firing at a moving target and your gunners are firing reactively. You therefore make a to hit roll with no modifiers. (Another way to look at this could be that you do get a +1 for FF but you also get the -1 to hit modifier for Snap Fire.)

Once the Overwatch attack has completed, remove one of the FF counters. The unit is no longer on Overwatch but is still affected by having been on First Fire.

If you do not use the Overwatch during the current turn, you may leave the unit on Overwatch until activated in the following turn, in which case you should leave your FF counters next to the vehicle until then. You may activate a unit which has already fired an Overwatch later in the same turn but only if this was carried over.

Example 1: In Turn 1 a Land Raider Squadron in placed on Overwatch. The Marine player places 2 FF counters next to his unit. Enemy units will gain +1 on their rolls to hit the unit as is usually the case for targeting a unit being on First Fire orders. Some Orks activate later in the turn and move into LOS of the Land Raiders on Overwatch. The Marine player declares he is using his Overwatch and resolves the attack. He then removes one of the FF counters to show that he is no longer on Overwatch but will still be vulnerable to attack until the end of the Turn. In the End Phase the remaining FF counter is removed and the unit may be ordered normally in Turn 2.

Example 2: In Turn 1 a Land Raider Squadron in placed on Overwatch. The Marine player places 2 FF counters next to his unit. Enemy units will gain +1 on their rolls to hit the unit as is usually the case for an enemy unit being on First Fire orders. Some Orks activate later in the turn and move into LOS of the Land Raiders on Overwatch. The Marine player does not use his Overwatch however and decides to withhold it for the time being. No other targets present themselves for the rest of Turn 1 and the player opts to carry it over until Turn 2. Early in turn 2 a Gargant moves into the Land Raiders' LOS and they Overwatch. They knock a few Power Fields down before removing one FF counter. The Gargant then returns fire gaining +1 on its rolls to hit as the Land Raiders still count as being on FF orders for the timebeing. Later again in the turn, the Marine player activates his unit on Advance orders and opens fire on the Gargant before moving off behind a building to escape more incoming fire...

Example 3: an enemy Titan is in the LOS of a unit on Overwatch. It activates on First Fire orders and performs its attacks. The unit on Overwatch may not react to this to perform an Overeatch attack as the Titan never moved.

Example 4: A Leviathan is activated and moves 10cm in the LOS of a Dark Reapers unit. Even though the Leviathan will be treated as being on First Fire orders, the Dark Reapers CAN perform an Overwatch attack because the Praetorian has physically moved. If it survives their Overwatch shot, the Leviathan is likely to hit those Dark Reapers hard!

Overwatch and spotting: Units on Overwatch may act as a spotter to call in an indirect barrage. If they do so, the specific model used to spot will forfeit its chance to fire later in the turn but the rest of the unit remains on Overwatch until such time as all models in the unit have been used as spotters or an Overwatch attack has been made. Note that you may NOT spot and call in an indirect barrage during an enemy activation. In other words, you may only units on Overwatch for spotting during your own activation. This is because it takes time to pinpoint enemy positions and communicate this to the artillery by which time your enemy will have had time to complete his move and fire (if able to do so).

Example 1: a detachment of Devastators have a good vantage point in a tall building. Earlier in the turn they were placed on Overwatch. The player activates a detachment of Whirlwinds and declares that he is using one of the Devastators as a spotter. The Whirlwinds can then fire indirectly at anything in the Devastator's LOS. Once the indirect fire has been resolved, the Devastator detachment remains on Overwatch but the stand that spotted may no longer fire if an Overwatch is triggered.

Example 2: an Eldar Titan moves into the LOS of a Tactical Detachment on Overwatch. The Tactical Troops may not be used as spotters during the enemy Titan's activation. However, once the enemy Titan has finished its activation and play reverts back to the Marines, the player may activate an artillery unit and use one of the models in the Tactical Detachment to spot for it. Once this attack is resolved, the Tactical Detachment remains on Overwatch but the model which spotted may no longer participate in any further attacks, and nor can it be used to spot again.
