Hi,

I played against someone last week who raised an issue with the Morale rules.

Currently you do the morale check and if failed you fall back.

If you Fall Back you then make a Rout test in the following turn (in Gold & SM2, it's the same turn in Evolution).

My opponent suggested that this is the troops regrouping after falling back and that there should be a further Morale Roll in the following turn to see if the unit can Rally to get back into the fight.

Personally I don't like the idea as it makes the likes of Orks and IG even less reliable when they are not to be depended on in the first place.

That said, I think it is an idea worthy of some discussion in the community, sometimes I am too set in my ways to recognise a good idea when it comes along!

Thoughts?

Regrouping after Falling Back IS rallying and getting back into the fight. As far as I am concerned, they are the same thing, thus another roll would be redundant.

Also, with an average game being 4-6 Turns, by the time most formations will be on Fall Back orders the game will be nearly over anyway. Requiring a third roll would just about guarantee that most troops that Fall Back never get back into the fight at all. Now, if the average game length was say 8 to 10 turns, then maybe, but as it is there just isn't enough game for a rule like that.

In my view anyway.

On the other hand, it might work for Evolution, as all of the rolls would then be in the same turn, so no game-time would be lost. Oh, wait, you said that he said "in the following turn". Hmm, sounds to me like perhaps his real problem is with the Rally roll being in the same turn. Perhaps you should try a couple of games of Evolution where the Rally roll goes to the next turn, like NEG does it.

Hi!

Given how the long the average game lasts (3 turns) and additional roll would be redundant and would likely not come into play in any meaningful way.

I think that this would be an unhelpful change to the rules. I very much agree with Magnus's comments on this matter, and having played Orks for years in SM2, I would not have been very happy to be having make multiple morale rolls. It's definitely an idea not to pursue in my opinion.
