I took a look at the core rules and some of the army lists for NetEpic, and I am intrigued.

I've long felt that EA was a little too abstracted for my taste. I do like the speed and clarity of the rules, however, at the end of the day, there isn't much flavor to it. Don't get me wrong - I do like EA, but find it slightly lacking sometimes.

On the flip side of that, the NetEpic rules seem almost Byzantine at first glance. Do you guys find that the games get bogged down in special rules ever? Are there a lot of questions regarding overlapping special effects, etc?

At first glance, it also looks like a lot more models are required to play. Is this true?

I guess I have a ton of questions - how do the games flow? Is there no "engagement" mechanic as there is in EA? In a nutshell, how would one get started with NetEpic?

I don't think I would ever switch over completely, but the occasional game of NetEpic might be fun when I am pining for goofy 40k flavor in 6mm.

Hi,

There might be a small threshold to cross in the beginning with all the weapon stats and such. But what I usually do is to copy the stats of the specific units I'm using for a particular game on a single spreadsheet, and then bring that along either on my laptop, pad or in hardcopy paper form to the game as an easy refrence sheet. Then you don't have to spend preasious gaming time looking up details in the rules sets.

Yep,and the other thing I'd recommend when starting out is that you pick a force to specialise in to get used to the units and what they can do. Marines and Eldar are the most straightforward forces to play when starting out.

There aren't really any more special rules in NetEpic or the old Space Marine system in my opinion, they're just applied differently. Some of the armies have more rules to remember, which can be difficult at first, but others are very forgiving and easy to learn from that respect, I second The Bissler's suggestion of Marines in that regard.

You may possibly find that you need more models for infantry formations, but that's offset by the fact that quite a lot of the vehicle formations (if they're taken as support cards) are smaller or the same size.

The rules work well, they'll just be very different to what you're used to in terms of how the mechanics work, unless you've ever played Space Marine II or RT/Second Edition Warhammer 40K (which used a similar to hit modifier system).

Hi!

The basic system is pretty straight forward, very little to remember. Orders are the same for everyone, as well as what you can do with them.

What I find harder to remember are the specific stats, with some armies being easier than others.

Agreed, the basis rules are, well, pretty basic. It's the specific stats which this middle-aged brain has difficulty remembering. ;D

Hi!

I found it easiest to print the summary sheets at the ends of the books to use during play. After a while you learn most of them. :)

I do print summary sheets. My complaint is that I remember a time when I hardly needed to consult the sheets, because I could easily recall the stats from memory.

Hi!

True. But that was a LONG time ago when just the first box set existed. ;)

Hi!

I found using my laptop or a tablet to be an excellent tool for looking up stuff in game as well. :)

I can completely relate to this. There was a time when I could tell you the stats for anything Eldar or Marine related. I still know them pretty well but there is the odd occasion where I have to check the sheets.

Actually, the biggest problem I have is remembering what the Special Abilities do. I really must print the appendix summary off some day!
