Defence or Defense?

In the Gold book I see that sometimes its Defence and sometimes Defense. What is the differance?

Page 8  and maybe there use big letters PDF

Not being a naitive english speaker, but wouldn't "defence" mean "removing a fence"? I always thought "defense" was like in "defensive". But yeah: Could be an american/british english issue.

Defense == American
Defence == English
