I was a US ARMY Grunt, '79-'90. Obtaining the Rank of Captain. I lead a Rifle Plt in the 101 Air Assault Div. and later Commanded a Mech[M113] Company of a Mech Bde of the 18th ARN Corps. I'm only telling you my experiences. I served in 4 Inf Bns, 1 Air Assault and 3 Mech … in Panama, Korea, [West]Germany and all over the States. Plus I've studied history most of my life. So I'm only stating this based on my experiences, studies, etc.

I know at the US ARMY Ranger School we generally wore a soft/patrol cap. Many patrols in Vietnam were run without helmets, as we were told and can be seen in many photos.


So that again is what I base my comments on …

Legion, I was not questioning your facts!

It's just a cultural thing, I immediately thought 'American' when you mentioned the headgear. (Sene your lads in the field, and yes, it can be a 'parade' of headgear!)

I was a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery (96-02) , and after your weapon, the strictest rules we have (had) were on headgear.

But everyone different!

Understand Sergeant ! Thank you for your service !

And yes, as you know … we Yanks can be "Cowboys" sometimes !
