Been thinking about the Astrolasians a bit more.

in particular - why would they come to Earth to raid for coal? There's no oxygen to burn it with.

Answer:

The primary form of settlement is crater domes. Since safety, insulation and radiation filtering are important things, and they're working with iron and glass (think crystal palace) the dome is multi skinned. Between the outside and inner skin, a large gap exists which is primarily filled with CO2. This helps trap heat and transfers some pressure loading to the outside skin (keeping it stretched tight like a bubble) while relieving some of the tension forces in the inner skin. If the outer skin is punctured, it acts like an insurance option, sacrificing the C02 rather then breathable atmosphere while repairs are made. This gap is also a resivoir for the green houses, allowing plants to grow at their full potential in the constant daylight.

How is this CO2 made?

simple. Where iron ore (or similar) has been collected, it is crushed, mixed with coal and fed along a long, tubular ceramic mixer. This mixer is heated to extreme tempretures by an array of solar powered Fresnel Lenses, with the resulting iron slag and CO2 bubbling out the other end.

The Astrolasians use similar weaponry to the British Empire, but have found the land frigates quite impractical to adapt to pressured air batteries, and so use lighter constructions typified by large wheels on the end of legs.

they need it warm! aliens in hot suits with atomic heating. mind control modules shuved into the ears of the rainforests beasts, perhaps arials sticking out of their skulls.

did dracula get killed in t300? could he have a kingdom of nymphs and flying nasties, with man wolves and poorly assembled dead people carrying nasty kenetic weapons. and local nasties hunter groups with wide brim hats and corsets

What about the Ottoman Turks? You could give them fancy uniforms... Perhaps a camelry corps roaming around the red deserts of mars...

I can't help but think something somewhat like the troops from Helion Prime in Chronicles of Riddick would be pretty sweet. Completely inspired SciFi Turks. Too close for comfort to make distinct IP??

I'm late to the party but I totally have to chime in.

HELL FRICKING YES to the steam engine-themed vehicles of an american faction. Just one vehicle like this would make me play and collect this game. Perhaps it could be a bit of a riff on the Squat Land Train thing, so you could add wagons with weapons on? I'm actually halfway through writing a novel with a fighting train theme so of course I may be biased. Paddleboat style vehicles would also be totally cool, and as a fan of Wild Wild West a giant spider would be brilliant.

I'd like to also support underground mole men. They'd be naturally rich in resources (as they live underground near to the coal) and it would be fun to have some non-man size infantry.

An ancient aquatic race would be cool but perhaps a little too similar in concept to the mole men.

This game has a lot going for it, can't wait to see what comes out next!

I understand it's 1870 but what about...

Post nuclear war Canada
- the entire country is radio active so they have to wear "big daddy" style suits just walk around out side and the suits drills double as mining suits to dig underground(see next point)
- with not much non radioactive land left they went under ground to find safe areas so the vehicals have giant drill heads on them to dig into the earth.

- units include
-giant drilling rigs - think the 3rd matrix machines driller
- infantry - even the adverage units are heavily armored but slow as hell

You could maybe have a faction that veers into Hellboy 'Golden Army' style territory, the more mystic Thule society type vibe? Would make a change from the heavy engineering focus yet remain in theme.

No Barsoom! 4 limbed Martians with space skiffs are surely a must! Hell Daemons would certainly tempt me as well. Although I can't help but think Steam Punk Daemons should be more Screw Tape Letters than charging invaders. Hawkmen are a possibility as well. Psychopathic dust bins and steam punk robo-men might be an idea as well.

India may be an idea for the Elephant big beasty faction as well. Indian and African fations could also give something distinct from Dystopian wars as well. Oh and tehnically it's not a proper alternative universe without air ships. They are the first change.
