Yep, the original classic. I had it out as I am in the middle of painting up the models that came in the set, as well as the extra SM v1 set that I have. I am actually painting everything up as they appear on the Adeptus Titanicus box lid, including the Space Marines.

For those that missed out on this time period, the early studio marine armies for Epic were painted red and black. The cover of the Adeptus Titanicus box has the red marines with non other than the Fire Wasps Titan Order badge on them. No idea who the blacks were supposed to be. The reverse side of the box also mentions the Blood Drinkers Space Marines, who in modern fluff, didnt even appear in the Heresy. So it looks like GW has re-written things a little since these days. Anyway, so I have a ton of Epic projects going on, but I had an extra AT and SM1 set, so I decided to go completely old school in their looks.

ANYWAY, so I had my AT stuff out when a friend came by on Sunday to watch NFL Redzone, and I made him play. We just did titans only playing 'The Trap' scenario, which involved two beastly Loyalist Warlords (a Nemesis and a Death Bringer) versus 3 lighter Rebel Warlords (1 Eclipse and 2 Night Gaunts). I didnt take pics or anything, sorry. I didnt go all crazy with the terrain or anything. And I was tempted to throw in some marines and land raiders, but it was my first time playing in awhile, and my friend's first time.

Anyway, to make a long story short. I played the rebels, and positioned the Eclipse infront of his Nemesis, with the Night Gaunts on either side to the flanks. After exchanging some long range fire, my Eclipse was destroyed in round 2 with a hit to its reactor. My Night Gaunt on the left barely made it into close combat (he had gotten his legs damaged while charging into CC) with the Nemesis by the end of turn 3, and my other managed to get to the Death Bringer on turn 4 (He had a longer way to go). The Night Gaunts had Chain Fists which hit on a 3+, whereas the Loyalists didnt have any close combat weapons so could only do improvised attacks on a 5+. Believe it or not, the game turned into a slug match where these lighter, 300 point Warlords were holding their own against the 1440 and 840 point Loyalist ones.

Since CC is simultaneous, we had some funny situations where one time, one fight had both titan's Reactors damaged and both shut down, so it was a race to get them repaired. The rebel one got his up first and the Death Bringer was chopped up.

But before that the Loyalist Nemesis actually defeated the other Night Gaunt I had, and spent a couple of rounds moving into position to take out the last rebel once he was done with the Death Bringer. Sure enough, I knocked out the Death Bringer, and as I charged the Nemesis, I was blown to bits.

Lots of limbs were torn off during the game, some crazy damage rolls and repairs, and it was fun playing a Titan only game. I can't remember the last time I did this. At some points things got bogged down when we werent making our hit and repair rolls, but it was still cool to imagine playing 6 or so Titans per side like my gaming group used to do back in the day (along side infantry and tanks).

I really love this old system. I'll try to set up another game and take pics and go thru a more detailed summary of how it all works.

This game and seeing the smaller marines and land raiders really got me into gaming.

Oh I should add, we completely skipped over making Malfunction Rolls, as I just forgot all about them. :/

Yeah it still gives me goose bumps today. There is something about the early version of the Heresy and the models that just does it for me that even the newest models and systems don't. There is very little I would change in this system.

Beetle Warlords will always be the true Warlord pattern in my mind. I also love the fluff on the back of the box (ditto for Space Marine 1e)—fiction from a time when the GW universe didn't feel quite so nailed down and set in stone. There's a lot to say for rediscovering the mysteriousness and openness of the setting.

You know, this is really well said. I think it sums up my fascination with it all. I mean, when I was younger, I would read thru the fluff stories in the rulebooks and note the places the battles took place, who fought in them, and who won if it stated. Simple stories that prob took a few minutes to write, but I spent hours imagining them.

The Horus Heresy will always be my favorite 40k storyline.

Created only because the lack of funds to make more of the models they did.

Adeptus Titanicus was for me the start of a journey that has lead me all the way to Vanguard Miniatures. It was a great game that inspired me to explore 6mm as a scale which I didn't know even existed and the background of the Horus Heresy just drew me in to the grand sweep and literally epic scale that could be played out with this scale of miniatures.

I still have my boxed set of AT and the expansion book plus SM1 of course proudly taking their place in my epic collection.
