I got to play some
Green Army Men: Plastic Men, Steel Resolve over the last week with my daughter.
As the cover says, this is a dexterity based wargame. That means instead of using dice, cards, or tape measures to determine movement and attacks, you use a coin "flick" or "flip" mechanic to determine results. It also uses 1:1 scale terrrain and WYSIWYG resolution. WYSIWYG resoltuion is simple, if a toy soldiers falls over, they are Out-of-Action and can no longer activate. 1:1 terrain means a shoe on the floor takes up exactly as much space as it does on the floor. No wierd "magic cylinders" here. Therefore, the rules are super intuitive and require no special components to play. All you need is a handful of plastic toy soldiers, a flat surface, and some found household times.
We played through almost all the scenarios on a couple different sized tables and used all of the weapons I had available. We used Shotguns, Flamethrowers, Mortars, Graenades, Sub-machine Guns, Rifles and those stupid Bayonet guys that I hate! Everything worked well and we had fun for about 3 hours of total game play with about 10 total games with sizes of 5-10 soldiers each.
I hate these guys! However, I still used them.
I only took photos and wrote up the details of two encounters though.
Forces:Choosing armies was really easy. I asked if she wanted to be green, grey, or tan soldiers. She opted for grey and I opted for green. We then reached into the bucket and pulled out 5 guys a piece and looked at what they were armed with.
Team Grey:1 Sub-machine gun armed soldier
1 Grenade armed soldier
2 Rifle armed soldiers
1 kneeling rifle armed soldier
Team Green:1 Sub-machine gun armed soldier
1 Bayonet and rifle armed soldier (Man I hate that pose!)
2 Rifle armed soldiers
1 Shotgun armed soldier
Overall, it was a good mix of weaponry types to try out.
... you can read all about them at the blog.
