So, I am about to venture into a bit of CADing to achieve a few conversion and modelling goals I cannot achieve via Plastic and GS.

I am decently familiar with both SketchUp and Blender as I use them to create/maintain a scale model of my Church's main venue and a 3d light plot.

So... what is a good scale to start out with in SketchUp? It really seems to fall on its face when doing super detailed small work. I was considering going to meters=mm (1000:1) and then just setting Blender to the proper scale down when exporting the STL files.

anyone see any speed bumps doing things this way?

I thought you only needed blender to do something like this. I had been doing a bit of practice for some basic stuff in blender to export later. Do you need another program to export properly?

I think you can do this solo with blender start to finish, I am just faster on Geometric shapes in SketchUp.

So our theme is Power Tools for large Mecha...... Our First Entry is a Worm-Drive Circular Saw.

Early cut, needs more detail and a mount. I am trying to work out a universal Reaver/Warlord Mount, but looks liek I will need two to overcome the Beetleback's Angled mounts.

I am pretty happy with this! I need to find a better way to do armored conduits, but overall I like it! Next up, a Demolition claw, I think.

<Edit> This is a Reaver sized mount.

Anyone have some advice on Rivets?

In the meantime, a bit of work on the Concrete Pulverizer.

NCO, so long story short, I am working in SketchUp. I had added Rivets and hex bolts (about .3 x .3 mm) and they are disappearing in the upload process to shapeways. I have tried meshlab to see if it is a geometry problem and things get funky when I try some of the recommended filters. Also trying to import into blender seems to have issues with parts of the geometry completely missing.

I am not sure if it is an issue with the .dae export or what.

Stl export is buggy as hell. Try fixing the file with netfabb Basic or their online service (both are free). Works for me very well. Could also be, that the nuts n bolts must be a bit longer to reach the inside of the case.
