Hi!

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with replicating the walls of the E:A Forgeworld buildings and/or the GW Epic ruins?
I need some more for urban terrain, but I am not sure if simple casting with the average stuff from an artists' shop will do the trick.

cheers,

Mod note: please be aware of and remember the taccom rules on threads/posts specifically about re-casting GW models (see stickys top of this sub-board). Might be best to ask some more 'general' casting questions!

I don't want to replicate the original FW buildings, but I want the walls, or parts thereof to make my own city terrain - ruined buildings, other combinations of walls that don't already exist as buildings etc.

Surely that cannot be a problem?

Hm, taking the wall relief might be ok, not sure, IANAL :D

Just trying to pre-empt any posts that might be guides on how to re-cast GW ruins etc., as they would probably have to be taken down :(

'im thinking about casting some single face gothic ruin walls, any advice?' is fine
'im thinking about re-casting the GW building ruins, any advice?' is not

I know lots of people do it, I have no personal objection to it, but taccom has rules on not detailing how to directly copy GW minis to protect the board.

This is just a note to make sure the thread does not develop in that direction.

If you want some Gothic-esq buildings (or other types that fit in 6mm games) then check out the Terrain section, specifically what is on offer from Wasteland Game Studio and Battlescene Designs.

Wasteland have a Kickstarter ongoing at the moment to produce a range of modular buildings that fit in with the gothic feel:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/920034824/wasteland-game-studio-6mm-scale-wargame-buildings

They also have a thread in the Terrain section talking about the buildings:

http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=26926

Likewise, Battlescene has an online store showing his wares:

http://www.freewebstore.org/storepage2375348.aspx

Look under the 6mm scifi.

Again, there is also a thread in the Terrain section about the Battlescene stuff.

http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=25390

Both guys are on there regularly talking about their buildings and other bits and bobs, so I would go and join in the conversation there.

Matt

Something similar in design to the ruins (flat, no overhangs) should be easy with a one part mould and resin. Just mount on plasticine with detail side up, build a box around with Lego, pour on RTV silicone.

For reliefs of solid buildings, if you don't want to chop the originals up you could maybe do it upside down and suspend the building above the silicone? So long as it is level.

I've not tried using plaster or the like so can't comment on those methods.

Making a mould from the walls shouldn't be a problem in theory. Just make a box from Lego or something, suspend the building in the box, with the wall you want to cast to face down, and fill it up with silicone.

I am more worried that casting with that kind of mould will not produce all the details that I want.

Why wouldn't silicone+resin not produce the detail?

I don't know. You tell me! That was my original question, more or less ;)

I also have the DZC resin buildings in mind, they have some extraordinary detailed wall pieces. But I want some for ruined buildings.

If you want to make casts of a master that is the way to do it, although you'd be better off embedding the master in plasticene/modelling clay and pouring on top, I know from experience that way is the best way, if you get a low viscosity resin you'll pick up all the detail in the mould including stuff like fingerprints...

I think as noted, there are number of other options for 6mm "Gothic" style ruins out ... Too many IMO ... not enough unique or alien looking structures. But for reason ... too many are drinking the GW Gothic Kool Aid ... :P ::) :D Even my bro at Exodus Wars has jumped on the Gothic bandwagon - http://www.exoduswars.com/Basing-and-Te ... nd+Terrain O0 ;) Now being a Capitalist/Ferengi at heart myself ... If there is a market for these type structures, then by all means sell them to the Kool Aid drinking GW brain washed masses ... Image :whistle ;D

;) I like orange ! But there are a number of other type structures out there from other companies that make "non-Gothic" terrain. Sci-fi, Ancient, SE Asian, Mid East to name a few, that also work for 6mm Sci-fi gaming tables ... 8) Gamecraft is a good example, having some "Gothic", but many other choices - http://store.gcmshop.com/c/34/1285th-scale-6mm And some nice SF from Brigade - http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=341108

If you don't want any thoughts on experimenting with modifying buildings and plaster, then do NOT look in my sig. A few pages back. The nurgle plog.

Ok, in which case I can say that you have nothing to worry about - silicone will pick out fine details and resin will reproduce them. It's about the best option there is, detail wise.
